With a week off from basketball due to icy winter weather
conditions, Railer Nation was more than ready Thursday for
basketball. Both the boys and girls teams took to the court to give
fans plenty of action.
First off for the girls, the Junior Varsity Team trounced Sacred
Heart-Griffin 68-23.
Four JV Lady Railers hit double figures. Freshman Leah Schneider led
the way with 22 points. Emma Konczyk had 15 points, Madelyn Koehler
had 14 points and it was Mackenzie Antoine with four three-pointers
to score 12 points.
For the Varsity, things didn’t fare quite as well.
Lincoln was off to a good start behind back to back threes from
Kennedy Lolling and Kaelyn Froebe, but the early 6-2 lead did not
last.
SHG tied the score at 8-8 with 3:12 left to play in the first
quarter and from the standpoint of the Cyclones, there was no
looking back in this one. Catie Eck’s three over Hailie Williams
with 1:45 showing on the clock would give SHG a lead they would
never relinquish. SHG held an 11-8 lead at the first quarter buzzer.
The Cyclones went on a tear in the second quarter and outscored
Lincoln 15-5 to build a 26-13 halftime lead over Lincoln. The woes
continued in the third quarter for Lincoln with Froebe scoring the
only points in five minutes of play. Her five points here was not
near enough to keep up with the Cyclones, who held a 35-18
advantage.
Williams finally hit a three for Lincoln and soon after Kennedy
Lolling would do the same thing.
SHG still held a 38-24 lead and right around this point it became
noticeable that these two teams share little love between them. SHG
had a sixteen point lead, 40-24 the score, going into the fourth
quarter and Lincoln had only eight more minutes to mount a comeback.
Kennedy Lolling did her best to lead the way, scoring seven
consecutive points.

But for the Cyclones, Eck could not miss and the 5’11 junior from
SHG was racking up the points, 21 to be exact as the Cyclones built
a 49-33 lead with 1:42 left to play.
The bright spot for Lincoln in the final minute of play was 6’1
Freshman Leah Schneider taking a pass in the paint and with one
pronounced dribble, she laid the ball up strong and through the net
it went. Lincoln will undoubtedly need more moves like this from
their 6’1 center off the bench, and in due time she will prove
herself at the Varsity level.
After Williams sank a couple free throws in the final seconds, the
end result was in the books. Lincoln falls to Central State Eight
opponent SHG by a score of 50-38.
[to top of second column] |
Both Froebe
and Kennedy Lolling scored 13 points apiece.
Eck led all scorers with 21 points for the Cyclones.
Prior to the
game, Junior Kaelyn Froebe was recognized for scoring her 1000th
career point. The public address announcer noted that the milestone
was actually reached last Thursday night when Froebe scored 29
points in the Lady Railers win over Lanphier. Many more great things
to come from this young lady. Congratulations on reaching this elite
milestone, Kaelyn!
