The Stags led at the end of the first quarter 16-14 over the
Crusaders but dug a hole in the second quarter and trailed 33-23
going into halftime.
The Crusaders held the lead throughout the third quarter as the
Stags saw a 46-33 deficit going into the final eight minutes of
play.
Antonio Coit-Kirk and Alec Hayes led the offensive attack all
evening but were particularly key in mounting the fourth quarter
near-comeback. Coit-Kirk scored eight points in the quarter and
Hayes had seven points here.
As time expired Brady Wolpert’s shot to tie the game missed and the
Stags, a no. 6 seed, had to settle with the 57-55 defeat. A great
team effort against the no. 3 seeded team in the tournament, Ottawa
Marquette.
Alec Hayes was the player of the game in this contest as his 19
points and 14 rebounds led the way for the Stags. Antonio Coit-Kirk
tossed in 16 points.
Following a tremendous fourth quarter effort that saw the Stags
outscore the Crusaders 22-11, Hartem Head Coach Jason Garber said,
“We played extremely hard until the end. They guys once again showed
no quit and played with a lot of heart.”
The coach continued, “Alec Hayes had a big three with fifteen
seconds left to put us within one point and then we fouled the next
play. They made one of two free throws. We came down the court and
Brady Wolpert just missed a shot from fifteen feet at the buzzer.”
