Highlights of Wednesday's NHL games

[December 29, 2016]  Dec 28 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from National Hockey League games on Wednesday:

Penguins 3, Hurricanes 2

Carl Hagelin scored the go-ahead goal with 4:15 remaining to finish another Pittsburgh third-period rally, as the Penguins beat the Carolina Hurricanes.

Chris Kunitz scored the tying goal early in the third against goalie Cam Ward, while Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 19 shots he faced after replacing an apparently ill Matt Murray (25 saves) at the start of the period.

There were no penalties called -- the first such game in the NHL this season.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Elias Lindholm's third goal of the season.

After Sidney Crosby scored only 26 seconds into the second period, the Hurricanes seized the momentum back later in the period when Lee Stempniak swatted in a rebound for his seventh goal before Kunitz and Hagelin sealed it.

Maple Leafs 3, Panthers 2 (SO)

Mitchell Marner scored the only shootout goal while rookie Auston Matthews produced a goal and an assist in regulation to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers.

Frederik Andersen had 45 saves through regulation and overtime. He also stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout.

The Panthers suffered a potentially huge loss when center Aleksander Barkov was injured in the second period.

Matthews, 19, was the first overall pick in the 2016 draft has 17 goals and 11 assists this season.

William Nylander also scored for the Leafs.


Blues 6, Flyers 3

David Perron and Scottie Upshall scored 1:20 apart in the third period and Robby Fabbri recorded his first hat trick of his career to carry the St. Louis Blues to a win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

A power-play goal by Brayden Schenn had put the Flyers ahead 3-2 at 4:13 of the third period. The lead lasted for just 1:40, however, before the Blues responded with their first goals in the third period in their last five games. 

Perron deflected a shot at 5:53 of the third period, his 10th goal of the season, before Upshall was able to score the when he also deflected a shot past goalie Steve Mason.

Fabbri scored his second goal of the game at 15:01 of the period to give the Blues a two-goal lead and then completed his hat trick with an empty net goal.

Canucks 2, Kings 1

Henrik Sedin scored early in the second period as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Los Angeles Kings.

Loui Eriksson also scored for the Canucks, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Tanner Pearson scored for the Kings (17-14-4).

Canuck goaltender Ryan Miller stopped 36 shots. L.A. goalie Peter Budaj stopped 18 shots.

Lighting 4, Canadiens 3 (OT)

The Tampa Bay Lightning rallied from two goals down in the final 10 minutes, then won 1:26 into overtime on Tyler Johnson's second goal to beat the Montreal Canadiens.

The Lightning rallied to force overtime when Victor Hedman and Ondrej Palat scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
