[July 13, 2016]  LINCOLN - For the past 36 years, First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln has been marking the 3rd Wednesday in July as the day they welcome the community into their fellowship hall for their annual Pulled Pork BBQ Dinner, proceeds of which come right back to benefit local missions.

This year is no different as church volunteers are busy making plans for this event to be held on Wednesday, July 20 from 5:00-7:30 at the church located on the corner of Pekin and Ottawa Streets.

The menu again includes a pulled pork sandwich, slaw or applesauce, chips, a drink and a homemade dessert with ice cream. Tickets are available in advance for $9 from church members or at the church office. They may also be purchased for $10 at the door.

Carryout dinners are available again this year from the Ottawa Street door of the church building. The 300 block of Ottawa Street will be one way headed south and the alley behind the church will be designated as one way headed east between the hours of 4 and 7 to better facilitate carryout traffic.

With nearly 1000 meals served each year, the church provides patrons with the choice of dining in the air-conditioned fellowship hall, gathering at tables outside in a tent where live entertainment will be provided, or taking advantage of carryout service.

This event is the major fundraiser for First Presbyterian's local mission activities with every penny being returned to Lincoln and Logan County. Three of the projects that the First Presbyterian Church BBQ specifically funds are Coats for Kids, Food for Thought, and Church Camps.

For many years, First Presbyterian Church has purchased coats for local elementary school students. These coats are purchased with BBQ funds and delivered to the schools before the chill of winter begins. For many students, it is the first brand- new coat they've ever had. Principals and teachers are grateful to be able to provide warmth for their students.

The Food for Thought Program just completed its third year of providing weekend food bags for participating students at Jefferson and Northwest Schools. Volunteers shop for non-perishable food items and pack over 100 bags each week during the school year. The bags are delivered to the schools on Thursday, and school personnel drop them in student backpacks without calling attention to the recipients. In a survey, participating parents responded enthusiastically to the additional food for the weekend.

Church camp is an exciting, educational, and spiritual adventure for elementary and junior high students. BBQ funds provide scholarships for parents wanting to provide their children with the opportunities of a Christian church camp. Funds have been used for East Bay and Stronghold camps, located in Hudson and Oregon, Illinois.
