Michael de Leeuw's early goal proved to be enough for the Chicago Fire in a 1-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night at Toyota Park in Bridgeville, Ill.

The goal came on a controversial call in the 19th minute.

Following a Sporting Kansas City foul, Brandon Vincent put the ball in play. It sounded like the referee blew his whistle twice, and the Sporting players seemed to hesitate. Vincent fed it to a streaking Razvan Cocis up the left side. He crossed it to Michael de Leeuw, who scored uncontested.

The Fire (4-8-5, 17 points) improved to 4-1-3 in its last eight home contests.

Sporting Kansas City (8-9-4, 28 points) outshot Chicago 20-3 and did not have a single attempt on goal in the first half and had only three all game.

Sporting's last scoring opportunity came on a free kick just outside the box at the 90-minute mark, but Brad Davis' free kick sailed just wide to the right of the goal.

Sporting Kansas City controlled possession in the first half, but it was the Fire who led at halftime.

The game was delayed one hour and 48 minutes by severe thunderstorms in the Chicago area.
