July 19 (The Sports Xchange) -
Los Angeles Dodgers' ace Clayton Kershaw has been shut down after he
experienced a recurrence of soreness in his back over the weekend.
Kershaw has not pitched since June 26 because of a herniated disk.
Manager Dave Roberts told the Los Angeles Times that a date for
Kershaw's return to the Dodgers is "uncertain."

The St. Louis Cardinals placed third baseman Jhonny Peralta on the
15-day disabled with a thumb injury, the team announced.
Peralta suffered a ligament strain in his left thumb during Sunday's
game against the Miami Marlins. He underwent surgery on the same
thumb prior to the season and missed the first 57 games.
- -
The Pittsburgh Pirates activated catcher Francisco Cervelli from the
15-day disabled list, the team announced.
Cervelli underwent surgery on his left hand five-plus weeks ago.
- -
The Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Hyun Soo Kim on the 15-day
disabled list with a right hamstring strain, and purchased the
contract of outfielder Julio Borbon from Double-A Bowie. Henry
Urrutia was designated for assignment to make room for Borbon on the
40-man roster.
Kim was injured while running to first base in the Orioles' final
game before the All-Star break and has missed the past four games.
The transaction is retroactive to July 11.

[to top of second column] |

Kyle Zimmer's winding, injury-pocked road to the big leagues took
another detour.
A right-handed pitcher ranked the second-best prospect in the Kansas
City Royals' minor-league system, Zimmer is out for the remainder of
the 2016 season because he needs surgery to correct thoracic outlet
syndrome.

The San Francisco Giants have signed veteran right-hander Kyle
Drabek to a minor league deal.
The former first-round pick and Top 30 prospect with a powerful arm
and a quick bat, appeared in one game this season with the Arizona
Diamondbacks before being released last month. He won eight games in
seven injury-marred seasons.

While the odds are stacked against him, the Giants are looking at
Drabek as an infielder, not a pitcher. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
