The Washington Nationals placed infielder Stephen Drew on the 15-day
disabled list Wednesday with vertigo-like symptoms.
The move is retroactive to July 24. Drew has played just once in the
past week, sitting out several days with dizziness.

Major League Baseball has threatened to fine Los Angeles Dodgers
right fielder Yasiel Puig if he wears customized cleats again.
The fine could be as much as $5,000 for a violation.
Puig first wore shoes with an American flag theme on the Fourth of
July and later wore shoes, designed by a local artist, with a Cuban
flag theme, according to ESPN.com.

San Francisco Giants second baseman Ramiro Pena was a late scratch
from Bruce Bochy's original starting lineup after reporting
continuing soreness from the testicular contusion he suffered in
Tuesday's game.

The San Diego Padres recalled pitcher Buddy Baumann and utility man
Alexi Amarista from Triple-A El Paso. Infielder Yangervis Solarte
was put on the family leave list.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Drew VerHagen, who started the season in the
majors before being optioned to Triple-A Toledo, is out for the
season. He is scheduled to undergo surgery for thoracic outlet
