[June 02, 2016]  June 1 (The Sports Xchange) - The Seattle Mariners placed starting pitcher Felix Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf and recalled left-hander James Paxton from Triple-A Tacoma.

The move is retroactive to May 28, making Hernandez eligible to return from the DL on June 12. Paxton replaced Hernandez in the rotation to start Wednesday night's game against the San Diego Padres in Petco Park.

Hernandez, 30, did not make the road trip with the team after he was examined Wednesday morning in Seattle by team orthopedist Dr. Edward Khalfayan, who diagnosed the calf strain. In 10 starts this season, Hernandez has a 4-4 record with a 2.86 ERA in 63 innings.

The injury is not considered serious or expected to sideline him beyond 15 days.

Hernandez's last visit to the DL was in 2008 with a sprained ankle. His record in 12 major league seasons is 147-105 with a 3.11 ERA.

Detroit Tigers closer Francisco Rodriguez has revealed he contracted the Zika virus this past offseason and is warning athletes going to the Rio Olympics about the dangers.

The 34-year-old native of Caracas, Venezuela, said he was laid up for two weeks with severe body aches, joint pain and headaches among the symptoms. K-Rod spends his offseason back home in Venezuela.

"It wasn't a cold, trust me," Rodriguez told ESPN.com. "It wasn't a cold. A cold, you have a sneeze, have a headache, take a couple Tylenol and you're done.

"You don't have a cold for two weeks, you don't have a body ache for two weeks, you don't have headaches, throwing up, weaknesses for two weeks."

Zika, a mosquito-transmitted illness, leads to severe birth defects, including babies born with abnormally small heads. It can cause neurological problems for adults.

Barry Bonds points the finger at himself as the person responsible for creating his negative image during his playing days.

In an interview with SportsOnEarth.com, Bonds called himself "straight stupid" for his actions, which were perceived as selfish and standoffish.

Bonds last played in the major leagues in 2007 with the San Francisco Giants but returned this year to serve as a hitting coach for the Miami Marlins.

"I was just flat-out dumb," he said. "What can I say? I'm not going to try to justify the way I acted toward people. I was stupid. It wasn't an image that I invented on purpose. It actually escalated into that, and then I maintained it."
