[June 03, 2016]  June 2 (The Sports Xchange) - Cleveland Browns tight end Gary Barnidge will be sidelined until training camp due to hernia surgery.

Barnidge was excused from Cleveland's on-field workouts Wednesday, but head coach Hue Jackson disclosed Thursday during a Browns Foundation Golf outing that the Pro Bowl tight end underwent hernia surgery.

The Browns open training camp the last week of July. Barnidge, 30, might be limited at the beginning of workouts.

Barnidge led the Browns with 79 receptions, 1,043 receiving yards and nine TDs in 2015.

As Deflategate passes 500 days since the now-infamous incident during the AFC Championship Game in Jan. 2015, the case drags on.

The latest plot twist is New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady fighting a four-game suspension that, unless overturned, will kick in at the start of the 2016 season.

A federal appeals court in April backed the NFL in a fight with the NFL Players' Association on Brady, ruling that commissioner Roger Goodell had the power to enforce the punishment.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked Wednesday at a gathering to honor his late wife about his decision to become involved in Brady's fight against the NFL, but he sidestepped the issue.

"I appreciate you asking that question and I respect it, but today we are celebrating volunteerism," Kraft said. "We always start this right before the start of the season. We're excited football is back, seeing these guys work out, but I'm going to keep all of our discussions today on a high point in the spirit of what this day is about."

The Washington Redskins' last remaining unsigned pick from the 2016 NFL Draft is now under contract.

The team announced that cornerback Kendall Fuller, a third-round choice from Virginia Tech, became the seventh and final 2016 selection to complete a deal. The Redskins also signed free agent wide receiver Jarvis Turner.

The 21-year-old Fuller was the No. 84 overall pick after leaving school a year early. He suffered a torn ACL early in his junior season.

Dates and times were finalized for 65 NFL preseason games starting in August.

The season kicks off with the annual NFL Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 7 between the Green Bay Packers and the Indianapolis Colts in Canton, Ohio.

The Sunday night game on ESPN will be the first of eight nationally televised games during the preseason. One of the prime-time matchups will be the Rams' return to Los Angeles to face the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 13.
