June 5 (The Sports Xchange) -
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Carl Crawford was designated for
assignment Sunday in the midst of poor production while receiving
limited play.
Crawford, 34, was batting just .185 with a .230 on-base percentage
in 81 at-bats. The Dodgers have 10 days to trade, waive or release
Crawford.
The Dodgers owe the remaining $35 million on the seven-year, $142
million contract Crawford signed prior to the 2011 season. Any team
claiming Crawford off waivers would be responsible for the remaining
amount.
Crawford has been a huge disappointment since signing the large
free-agent contract with the Boston Red Sox. He was traded to the
Dodgers in August 2012 and never regained the form that made him a
four-time All-Star with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Los Angeles filled the roster spot by recalling catcher/infielder
Austin Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Barnes was batting .306
at Oklahoma City.

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard said he is
infuriated after a fan threw a beer bottle in his direction during
Saturday night's home game.
Howard was walking back to the dugout after ending the game as a
pinch hitter at Citizens Bank Park when the bottle landed near his
feet. He said he didn't notice the bottle while it was in the air.
"I don't play that. To me, that's crossing the line," Howard told
reporters on Sunday. "It becomes a security issue. It's not
necessary. That stuff infuriates me."
The Phillies said Sunday that they are investigating the incident.
Howard has been under heavy criticism due to his light production
while making a hefty salary. He is batting just .151 in the final
season of a five-year, $125 million deal.

Cleveland Indians right-handed reliever Joba Chamberlain is expected
to be activated Monday and rejoin the team in Seattle.
Indians manager Terry Francona said Chamberlain would return from
the disabled list on time. Chamberlain was placed on the 15-day DL
on May 22 with a strained left intercostal.
The 30-year-old Chamberlain has made 14 relief appearances this
season and has a 1.93 ERA with 15 strikeouts and six walks over 14
innings.

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Anthony DeSclafani made his final rehab
start for Triple-A Louisville on Saturday and will rejoin the
rotation this week.
Reds manager Bryan Price said right-hander Raisel Iglesias will
pitch out of the bullpen when he comes off the disabled list, likely
in late June.

[to top of second column] |

Boston Red Sox left fielder Blake Swihart (left ankle) and catcher
Ryan Hanigan (neck strain) were placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Outfielder Rusney Castillo, right-hander Heath Hembree and catcher
Sandy Leon were brought up from Triple-A Pawtucket. Right hander Noe
Ramirez was optioned to Pawtucket.
--
New York Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud, on the disabled list since
April 26 due to an elbow injury, is set to return within 20 days now
that his minor league rehab stint has begun.

First baseman Lucas Duda, on the DL since May 23 due to a back
injury, has yet to begin baseball activities. He is likely out
through the rest of the month.
--
Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Brandon Guyer was placed on the 15-day
disabled list with a left hamstring strain.
Guyer, who is hitting .271 with six homers and 14 RBIs in 40 games
this season, said he hopes to be back as soon as his 15 days are up.
The Rays recalled infielder Nick Franklin from Triple-A Durham to
take Guyer's spot on the 25-man roster.
--
Seattle Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez, who went on the
disabled list Wednesday with a strained right calf, is still unable
to throw and likely won't be ready to come off the DL when he is
eligible June 11.
--
Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray was reinstated from the
15-day disabled list.
Gray was sidelined by a strained right trapezius and placed on the
DL on May 22. He threw three bullpens and one simulated game,
skipping his scheduled rehab start for High Class A Stockton to
start the series finale on Sunday.
