[June 09, 2016]   LINCOLN - Youth attending Wednesday evening's Fishing Clinic got some solid tips that might help them land that big one at this Saturday's Nathan Turner Memorial Fishing Derby.

The Clinic was sponsored in coordination with the Lincoln Park District, Lincoln Police Department's D.A.R.E. program and the Nathan Turner family, which includes his wife, Sarah; his son, Benjamin; his parents Dan & Nancy; his sisters, Janell and Nanette; and many other loving family members and friends.

Lincoln Police Officers Jason Lucas (left) and Chris Reed explained what size pole is needed for various types of fish, longer poles and large hooks are needed to catch larger fish. Officer Miles Craig was also watched on with his children as his fellow officers kept kids in rapt attention demonstrating the attachment of fishing tackle and talking the talk 'how to catch a fish' just as if they did this all the time.

Officer Lucas said he uses small hooks to catch blue gills, and also in winter fishing as fish eat small amounts and bite lightly in the cold. Large hooks are needed for larger fish such as cat and carp, and rounded hooks keep fish from swallowing the hook for easy release.

13 Once the kids knew about how to choose a pole, and equip it with a hook, sinkers and bobber, and a little bit about bait, it was time to head out to learn about casting the line and what to do when that fish bites.

Also present at the Clinic were members of the Turner family. They sponsor the event in honor of the young Lincoln City Alderman who passed away unexpectedly from heart complications six years ago. Nathan would have been 36 last Tuesday, May 31. He loved family time and fishing; and the Turner family, just as Nathan, would love for other families to have the same fun experiences together.

All that remains now is for Saturday to get here real quick so everyone, kids and parents, can head out to Hickory Lanes Campground and say "Gone fishing!"
