Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Accepting Applications for Free Nursing Camp for Students

[March 01, 2016]  LINCOLN - Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital is accepting applications for a free, three-day summer camp for high school juniors who will graduate in 2017 and are interested in a nursing career.

The summer camp, called Teens Experiencing Nursing (TEN), will be held July 13-15 at the nonprofit community hospital.

The program begins with an orientation and an overview of the nursing profession. Participants will take a field trip to the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation, where they’ll work in the Simulation Center to learn and practice basic nursing skills.

Students will also have the opportunity to job shadow and interact with nursing staff on several units.

“TEN Camp participants receive a hands-on opportunity to experience nursing education and nursing practice,” said Heather Callahan, a registered nurse and clinical education coordinator at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital. “We’re looking for the best and brightest high school students interested in pursuing a nursing career.”

TEN Camp will be limited to 10 students. Campers are expected to attend all three days of the camp and may not leave the camp for any reason other than a family emergency.

Students will need to complete an application, which includes a school counselor reference, written permission from parents or guardians and an essay explaining why they want to become a nurse. Applications are available from local high school guidance counselors and online at www.ALMH.org.

The deadline for applications is April 1.
