NHL roundup: Burns enjoys historic night in Sharks' win

 SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Brent Burns enjoyed a historic night in leading the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday at SAP Center.

Burns tied the franchise record for most goals and points by a defenseman as San Jose won for the seventh time in nine games to move within one point of idle and second-place Anaheim in the Pacific Division.

Burns' 64th point of the season came on a second assist on Joonas Donskoi's tie-breaking power-play goal at 6:37 of the third period after Burns had tied the game in the third with his 26th goal.

Melker Karlsson also scored for the Sharks while David Krejci and Loui Eriksson scored for the Bruins.

Kings 5, Stars 2

DALLAS -- Anze Kopitar had a goal and an assist and Jhonas Enroth stopped 24 of 26 shots for Los Angeles in a win against Dallas at American Airlines Center.

Kris Versteeg, Tyler Toffoli, Dustin Brown and Trevor Lewis also scored for the Kings, who won nine of their last 12 games. Rob Scuderi also had a career-high tying two assists.

Alex Goligoski and Cody Eakin scored for the Stars.

Capitals 2, Hurricanes 1 (OT)

WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 42nd goal with 3:22 left in overtime, and Washington defeated Carolina.

Ovechkin had gone without a goal in his last five games, his longest slump of the season.

Justin Williams scored in regulation for the Capitals while Jordan Staal scored for the Hurricanes.

Penguins 2, Islanders 1 (SO)

PITTSBURGH -- Kris Letang was the only successful shooter in the shootout, and Pittsburgh overcame a remarkable night by rookie Jean-Francois Berube to beat the New York Islanders.

Berube made 33 saves, including seven in overtime, in only his third career NHL start. Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves for the Penguins.

Chris Kunitz scored the only Penguins goal in regulation, while Kyle Okposo answered for the Islanders.

Maple Leafs 4, Lightning 1

TORONTO -- Connor Carrick, Ben Smith, Zach Hyman and P.A. Parenteau scored to lift last-laced Toronto over Tampa Bay.

Brian Boyle scored Tampa's only goal against Maple Leafs netminder Jonathan Bernier.

Panthers 4, Canadiens 1

MONTREAL -- Vincent Trocheck scored a goal and added an assist to help Florida beat Montreal at the Bell Centre.

Nick Bjugstad, Jiri Hudler and Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers, who moved into the driver's seat in the race for the Atlantic Division lead. Alex Galchenyuk scored the lone goal for Montreal.

Al Montoya stopped 27 shots for Florida while Mike Condon made 32 saves for the Canadiens.

Senators 3, Wild 2 (OT)

OTTAWA -- Erik Karlsson scored on a slap shot from the slot with 30.4 seconds left in overtime to give Ottawa a dramatic victory over Minnesota at Canadian Tire Centre.

The Senators forced the extra period with a Mika Zibanejad goal off a rebound from the end boards with 7.1 seconds left in the third.

Ryan Carter and Nino Niederreiter scored for the Wild, while Mike Hoffman had the other Senators goal.

Flyers 4, Red Wings 3

PHILADELPHIA -- Behind a complete effort from start to finish, Philadelphia claimed an important win to move within one point of Detroit for the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot.

Michael Raffl led the Philadelphia charge with his second career two-goal game. Wayne Simmonds and Shayne Gostisbehere also scored for the Flyers.

Tomas Tatar, Andreas Athanasiou and Pavel Datsyuk scored for the Red Wings.
