An unusual combination

[March 24, 2016]  The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus bring together an unusual combination of two forces that we don’t often see together. Jesus’ death is a display of His extraordinary humility, and His resurrection speaks of His extraordinary power.

Power and humility

We don’t normally see these two go hand-in-hand. We all know people with extraordinary power, but not a lot of humility. And we know some who are
humble, but don’t have a lot of power. I know that my inclination is that when I have power, I am tempted to leverage it. I want to use it to get my way. The more power a person gets, the harder it is to be humble.

That is one reason Easter is so extraordinary. It brings together two powerful, yet seemingly opposites forces. We all know Jesus had extraordinary power, and could have done anything with it. Yet His extraordinary humility led him to set aside his power and go to the cross for us.

Paul, in Philippians 2:5-8 said “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus; Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant…..He humbled himself and became obedient to death…”

What would happen in our homes, or in our churches if we coupled our influence (power) with humility? What would happen if we did nothing “out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility considered others better than ourselves”? (Phil. 2:3)
When these two are brought together, they may be the most powerful force of all.
