Sporting Kansas City acted as the aggressor in front of a
sellout crowd at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan.,
firing a whopping 17 shots, with only striker Brad Davis'
30th-minute effort breaking through.
Kansas City took the early lead with Davis' left-footed curling
shot from the right flank that tucked inside the far post.
Midfielder Graham Zusi headed a cross to the feet of Davis, who
cut around a defender and shot past goalkeeper Brian Rowe.
Giovani Dos Santos equalized for Los Angeles as part of a speedy
counterattack to catch Sporting Kansas flat-footed. In the 42nd
minute, striker Gyasi Zardes sent a long ball up to field for
Dos Santos. The Mexican international cut inside and chipped the
ball over the hands of goalkeeper Tim Melia.
It was Los Angeles' lone goal on four shot attempts.
Kansas City was perhaps unlucky to allow the Galaxy to equalize
before the half because the home side dominated the early
goings. By halftime, Kansas City had outshot the Galaxy 10-2 and
dominated possession at 62 percent.
In the second half, Galaxy defender Ashley Cole was sent off
after earning two yellow cards in quick succession, which gave
Kansas City a one-man advantage for the final 20 minutes. Cole
was carded for time-wasting in the 69th minute and then seconds
later for a studs-showing tackle into the ankle of midfielder
Benny Feilhaber.
With the result, Kansas City and the Galaxy remain one point
apart in the Western Conference standings, with Los Angeles
(4-3-1) in fourth place and Sporting (4-2-4) in sixth.
Kansas City heads to Houston on Saturday, while the Galaxy hosts
the New England Revolution on Sunday.
