Atlanta announced Sunday that it had selected the contract of
infielder Emilio Bonifacio from Triple-A Gwinnett and optioned
right-handed reliever Chris Withrow to the same club.
Major League Baseball studied the move and informed the Braves that
Bonifacio is ineligible to join the Braves until Saturday, leaving
Atlanta a player short for Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
The Braves won anyway, 4-3 in 10 innings.
Bonifacio was designated for assignment by the Braves on April 2 and
then released on April 6. He signed a minor league deal with the
organization on April 10.
Major league rules call for a 30-day window from the date of release
before a player can rejoin the same team.
