time in his five-year career. He allowed one run on six hits in
seven innings. He walked one and struck out five.

DeShields capped a seven-run eighth inning by following with a solo

open the eighth, blanking the Rangers on three hits, nine strikeouts

three runs (two earned) and six hits in five innings in a matchup of
the league's top teams. He struck out seven, but walked four (one
intentional), threw three wild pitches and committed a fielding

Pirates 10, Cardinals 5
ST. LOUIS -- Gregory Polanco's three-run homer off the left field
foul pole capped a four-run seventh inning, lifting Pittsburgh over
St. Louis at Busch Stadium.
Those runs became vital when the Cardinals rallied for three in its

that brought it back into contention.
But the Pirates turned to setup man Tony Watson, who pitched a clean
eighth to settle things down. Josh Harrison and Chris Stewart added
two-out RBI singles in the ninth that served as insurance for their
fifth win over the Cardinals in six meetings this year.
Astros 5, Mariners 1
HOUSTON -- Collin McHugh pitched seven strong innings and Jose
Altuve recorded his third career three-steal game as Houston
salvaged a four-game series split with Seattle at Minute Maid Park.
McHugh delivered his best start of the season, allowing just one run
on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts. The lone run he
surrendered came courtesy of scalding hot Mariners second baseman
Robinson Cano, who crushed his 12th home run of the season and fifth
against the Astros leading off the top of the fourth inning.
Otherwise, McHugh was practically impenetrable. He retired the
Mariners in order in the first, third and seventh innings. The
Mariners managed consecutive baserunners in the second and fifth,
but with two outs each time, McHugh easily recovered to snuff those
rallies.

York defeated San Diego at Petco Park to earn a split of their
four-game series.

and two walks while striking out 10 over six innings. Additionally,
it was Harvey who scored the decisive fourth Mets run after doubling
in the sixth.
Red Sox 5, Yankees 1
NEW YORK -- Steven Wright confounded New York with his knuckleball
by pitching a three-hitter and leading Boston to a victory.

through the eighth inning and finished off his first complete game
by throwing 16 more pitches in the ninth.
The right-hander struck out seven, walked one and threw 66 of 101
pitches for strikes. He nearly became the first Red Sox pitch a
nine-inning shutout at New York since Jon Lester on July 3 but gave
