Principal Heather Baker welcomed the students and congratulated
them on the funds they raised. The students passion for beating this
disease was reflected in the nearly $900 raised for the American
Cancer Society (ACS). The seventh grade class raised the most money,
$253, and was pronounced winner of the pizza party.
The ACS sponsored the education based program, Relay Recess, which
is designed for elementary schools. The funds raised go toward
continued cancer research and support.
Cancer survivor and ACS volunteer, Carolyn Motley, was impressed
with how much the students raised this year, which it was even more
than last year.
Eighth grade students took charge in the gymnasium during the
assembly portion and in activities afterward.
At the podium, several speakers shared statistics in the war on
cancer. A particularly moving moment was when everyone who had been
affected by cancer as a relative, a friend or themselves, was asked
to stand.
No one, or nearly no one, was left sitting.
Following the brief assembly students alternated between special
lessons back in their classrooms, activities in the gym, and walking
the outside track.
In the gym
Motley brought ACS display and exhibit materials that were set up in
stations. Eighth grade students assisted with the three displays.
At the first table students handed out UV bead bracelets and
explained how the beads change color when worn outdoors and show the
level of exposure to penetrating ultraviolet rays that are damaging
to skin. They were also told the importance of using sunscreen or
other protection such as clothing or hats.
The next table had fresh pig lungs that the students explained the
difference between healthy and smoking tar diseased lungs.

And then students were led in jumping rope for fitness.
At the far end of the gym, additional physical activities were
encouraged using a fun game of cards.
In the classroom
Students learned more about how good nutrition prevents disease and helps
them do well in school too. They looked at nutritional guidelines and enjoyed
some yogurt. They talked about living a healthy lifestyle, which included
physical activity, the effects tobacco products, being sun smart and other ways
to prevent cancer.
They also received take-home information for parents and families.
Relay Recess
At 2 p.m. students began walking their laps with the kindergarteners being the
first to take the track.
Recess Relay activities are designed to be fun and to reinforce lessons. The
lessons and activities allowed the students to become better equipped to live a
healthier lifestyle. The student led leadership roles, activities and
fundraising also brought the student body closer together in the unified fight
on cancer.
