[October 17, 2016]   LINCOLN - If you haven't ventured into the downtown lately, you may be in for a good surprise.

In recent years Lincoln's Historic Courthouse Square gradually picked up palpable pulse. Most any day or evening, even more so when there are special events such as this past weekend's Film Festival, you will find the walks abuzz - might be all the wonderful coffees that can be found in several newer coffee houses and eateries - with friendly activity.

Wonderful upscale breakfasts, lunches and pastries can be found at Deep Roots Cafe, By the Bean, Flossie and Delzenia's; and down-home cooking at Mama's Cafe in the Arcade.

Sorrento's offers great family dining with a featured Italian flavor, while across the way on the back side of the Arcade, Guzzardo's Italian Villa offers generations of favorites that can also be consumed in the happening younger crowd new bar below, the Spirited Republic.

Attractive flower pots, window planters, in-ground plantings and good lighting make for pleasant day or evening walks, and plenty of people young and older do so.

Friday evening as a near full moon rose to the east and the first movie presentation "Lincoln" was taking place, near to the theater all kinds of food aromas from Joe's Pizza and Alley Bi Saloon burgers, garlic from Guzzardo's wafted on the warm evening air tantalizing appetites; the sound of the Railers band and game starting up could be heard as people going to dinner, kids just bumming around, all made for a hometown good, all-around nice experience.

Downtown has become a great place with plenty of food choices and a great places to shop for specialty stores, home decor and gifts, and more shops to come soon. Entertainment opportunities from the monthly Lincoln Art Institute gallery shows and receptions, weekly live bands; seasonal events from family friendly and affordable Third Fridays, Kansas City Barbeque contests, and other specialty events, plus the recently expanded Lincoln Theatre Grand 8 offering an eight-plex, state-of-the-art digital movies in new and remodeled movie galleries - all have breathed new social and economic life into the downtown.

Ten to 15 years ago the streets rolled up about 4 p.m.
Today, quite the turnaround is taking place on Lincoln's Downtown Historic Courthouse Square.

All good impressions of a place to call home.
