Sept 1 (The Sports Xchange) -
Highlights of Major League Baseball games on Thursday:
Cubs 5, Giants 4
Addison Russell's two-run seventh inning single propelled the
Chicago Cubs a lead they never relinquished in a 5-4 victory over
the San Francisco Giants.
Russell dropped a bloop single into left field off Giants reliever
Cory Gearrin to score to Dexter Fowler and Kris Bryant with the
tying and go-ahead runs.
The Cubs (86-47) extended their National League Central lead to
15-1/2 games.
Cubs reliever Joe Smith (1-0) worked two innings for the victory,
while Giants reliever Hunter Strickland (3-2) took the loss after he
put the tying and go-ahead runners on base.
Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr. pitched a one-two-three ninth for his
first career save.
The Giants (72-61) fell two games behind the idle NL West-leading
Los Angeles Dodgers. They remained atop a tight pack in the NL wild
card playoff chase.
Braves 9, Padres 6
Mike Foltynewicz won his fourth straight decision and Freddie
Freeman homered in a three-RBI game as the Braves defeated the San
Diego Padres.
Adonis Garcia reached base four times for the Braves (51-83) on two
hits, a walk and a hit batter. Ender Inciarte, on a 12-game hitting
streak, and Matt Kemp also had two hits.
Foltynewicz (8-5) allowed four hits over six innings, the only
damage coming on a two-run homer by Wil Myers and a bases-empty
drive by Hector Sanchez. The right-hander struck out three and
walked none.
Jarred Cosart was chased in a five-run fifth and was charged with
seven runs while giving up five hits, walking three and hitting a
batter in 4-1/3 innings.

Marlins 6, Mets 4
Christian Yelich continued to thrive in the cleanup spot when he
homered for the third time in as many games and finished with three
hits, three RBIs and two stolen bases as the Miami Marlins beat the
New York Mets.
Xavier Scruggs had an RBI double for the Marlins while Jeff
Francoeur and Jeff Mathis had two hits apiece.
The Marlins (68-66) moved within three games of the idle St. Louis
Cardinals in the race for the second wild-card spot in the National
League.
The Mets (69-65) missed a chance to move within a game of the
Cardinals. New York have won nine of their last 12 games.
Twins 8, White Sox 5
Byron Buxton and Trevor Plouffe homered to help the Minnesota Twins
snap a 13-game losing streak in an 8-5 win over the Chicago White
Sox.
Buxton's homer came in his first game back since being recalled from
Triple-A Rochester earlier on Thursday.
Ervin Santana (7-10) scattered 11 hits but stranded 10 White Sox
batters and allowed just two runs over five innings, walking two and
striking out six in earning the victory.
Brandon Kintzler worked a scoreless ninth for his 13th save.
