Sept 13 (The Sports Xchange) -
Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games:
Padres 6, Giants 4
Rookie Ryan Schimpf belted a two-out, two-strike, three-run home run
in the ninth inning Tuesday night, capping a five-run rally that
lifted the San Diego Padres to a stunning, 6-4 victory over the San
Francisco Giants.
Home runs by Angel Pagan and Gorkys Hernandez helped the Giants take
a 4-1 lead into the ninth.
However, the fifth Giants pitcher, Hunter Strickland, gave up three
singles and a bases-loaded walk to Wil Myers with one out, allowing
the Padres to creep within 4-2. Strickland got Yangervis Solarte to
ground out, scoring Jon Jay, before rookie left-hander Steven Okert
was summoned from the bullpen to face the lefty-hitting Schimpf.
Seeking his first career save, Okert got his rival in a 1-2 hole
before Schimpf unloaded on the potentially game-ending pitch,
launching it into the bleachers in right-center field for a
three-run homer.
Yankees 3, Dodgers 0
Jacoby Ellsbury and Didi Gregorius homered on consecutive pitches
with one out in the seventh inning, lifting New York to a victory
over Los Angeles.
Ellsbury capped a nine-pitch at-bat by lifting a full count
curveball from Ross Stripling into the second deck in right field.
Gregorius batted for Ronald Torreyes and sent Stripling's fastball
into the right-center field seats.
The Yankees won for the eighth time in 10 games.
Diamondbacks 11, Rockies 4
Jean Segura hit two home runs, and Brandon Drury went deep for the
second straight game in Arizona's victory over Colorado.
Segura, Yasmany Tomas and Paul Goldschmidt had three hits apiece,
and Segura, Tomas and Welington Castillo had two RBIs each as
Arizona won consecutive home games for the first time since July
16-17.
Segura homered in a four-run first inning after Colorado scored
three runs in the top of the frame off Robbie Ray (8-13), who gave
up four runs and struck out seven in five innings.
Marlins 7, Braves 5
Ichiro Suzuki, not showing his age at 42, reached 900 multi-hit
games in majors with his 26th of the season and second in as many
games as Miami defeated Atlanta.
Suzuki, who has 3,027 career hits in the majors, recorded a triple
and single to lift his average .304, drew a walk, scored two runs
and delivered an RBI the day after a three-hit game.
Matt Kemp hit his 31st homer and Freddie Freeman reached 30 for the
first time in a three-RBI game for the Braves. Christian Yelich was
2-for-3 with a double, drew two walks, drove in two runs and scored
one for the Marlins.
Reds 6, Brewers 4
Joey Votto homered and Adam Duvall doubled twice and drove in two
runs, lifting Cincinnati over Milwaukee at Great American Ball Park.
Votto went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, raising his batting
average to .318 after a slow start to the season.
Cincinnati's five-game winning streak matches its longest of the
season.
Chris Carter, Keon Broxton and Jonathan Villar homered for Milwaukee
which has dropped five of its last six to the Reds.
Twins 8, Tigers 1
Jorge Polanco drove in a career-high four runs and Kyle Gibson
pitched eight strong innings, carrying Minnesota over Detroit at
Comerica Park.
Polanco had a two-run homer and two-run single among his three hits.
Gibson posted his first victory in five starts by holding the Tigers
to one run on five hits while striking out four.
Twins second baseman Brian Dozier extended his hitting streak to a
career-high 17 games with three hits and also scored twice. Kennys
Vargas supplied two hits and a solo homer, while Robbie Grossman
added two hits and two RBIs for the Twins.
Rays 6, Blue Jays 2
Alexei Ramirez hit a three-run homer, Steven Souza Jr. hit a solo
shot, Drew Smyly won his fifth consecutive decision, and Tampa Bay
defeated Toronto.
The victory gave the Rays the season series over the Blue Jays at
10-8 with the rubber match in the current three-game series to be
played Wednesday afternoon.
Russell Martin hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays.
Athletics 5, Royals 4
Khris Davis homered again and Yonder Alonso hit a pinch two-run
double with two out in a four-run eighth inning as Oakland topped
Kansas City.
[to top of second column] |
Royals starter Danny Duffy gave up a home run to Ryon Healy to lead
off the eighth and after he walked Brett Eibner with one out, rookie
left-hander Matthew Strahm relieved him. After Strahm gave up an
infield single to Chad Pinder, Joakim Soria was summoned to protect
a 3-2 lead.
Instead, Soria surrendered the two-run double to Alonso and a
run-producing single to Marcus Semien. Soria has blown seven saves,
matching his career worst, in eight opportunities.
Pirates 5, Phillies 3
Sean Rodriguez's opposite-field, three-run blast off of Philadelphia
closer Jeanmar Gomez propelled Pittsburgh to a much-needed victory
at Citizens Bank Park.
With the Phillies ahead 3-2, Gomez, who worked Monday night in a
non-save situation, walked Francisco Cervelli to start the top of
the ninth inning. Shortstop Jordy Mercer then rocketed a double the
other way to the corner in right field, putting runners at second
and third with nobody out for Rodriguez.
Mets 4, Nationals 3 (10 innings)
Rookie T.J. Rivera hit a solo homer on an 0-2 pitch from closer Mark
Melancon with one out in the top of the 10th as New York beat
Washington.
It was the first homer in the career of Rivera, who had three hits
and three RBIs. Jerry Blevins fanned Daniel Murphy for the final out
of the game with Jayson Werth, who had singled, on base to get the
save.
The second-place Mets are nine games back of the first-place
Nationals, and New York will aim for its seventh straight series win
Wednesday.
Orioles 6, Red Sox 3
J.J. Hardy and Nolan Reimold each slugged homers as Baltimore posted
a victory over Boston at Fenway Park.
Hardy's three-run blast was his 10th homer of the year, while
Reimold's two-run bomb was his sixth. Jonathan Schoop was 3-for-5
and socked his 24th homer, a solo shot in the ninth.
The Orioles pulled into a tie for second place in the American
League East with the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost at home to the
Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.
Rangers 3, Astros 2
Elvis Andrus delivered a game-tying, two-out triple in the ninth
inning and Jurickson Profar followed with an RBI single to lift
Texas over Houston at Minute Maid Park.
The Rangers rallied against Astros closer Ken Giles, whose strikeout
of Rougned Odor proved decisive when Odor reached on a wild pitch.
Astros catcher Jason Castro socked a leadoff home run in the sixth
inning off Rangers right-hander A.J. Griffin.
White Sox 8, Indians 1
Jose Abreu went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Chicago relied on a
season-best, seven-run inning to pull away from Cleveland.
Todd Frazier and Carlos Sanchez also drove in two runs apiece as the
White Sox erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning. Chicago won
for the fifth time in its past seven games.
Brandon Guyer finished 1-for-2 with a solo home run to lead the
Indians. Jason Kipnis added a pair of doubles for Cleveland, which
dropped its second straight game.
Cardinals 4, Cubs 2
Alex Reyes worked 4 1/3 scoreless innings and Brandon Moss cracked a
tie-breaking two-run homer to lift St. Louis past Chicago at Busch
Stadium.
Reyes relieved ineffective Jaime Garcia and overcame six walks,
allowing only one hit and striking out four as he beat Chicago in
relief for the second time this year. Reyes stranded 10 baserunners
in his outing, leaving the bases loaded in the second and fourth.
Another rookie, Matt Bowman, followed Reyes with two perfect
innings. Kevin Siegrist, pitching the ninth because regular closer
Seung Hwan Oh is battling a groin injury, earned his second save by
retiring the Cubs in order.
Mariners 8, Angels 0
Behind Taijuan Walker's first career shutout and three homers,
Seattle beat Los Angeles for its season-high seventh straight win.
Walker was sensational, allowing just three hits and striking out 11
batters to match a career high in winning his second straight start.
The Angels' first hit came when Kole Calhoun found a hole on the
right side, through the Mariners' shift, for a clean single to lead
off the seventh. The Angels' first base runner came in the sixth
when Kaleb Cowart reached on Ketel Marte's two-out throwing error.
