The two teams played 75 minutes of scoreless soccer before the Big
Blue got on the board on a goal by Bradyn Nokes (Quincy, H.S.) off a
corner kick from Nick Hatfield (Godfrey, Alton H.S.). Millikin got a
much needed insurance goal in the 88th minute when senior Tucker
Mathieson (Decatur, Warrensburg Latham) hit his fifth goal of the
season off an assist from Trey Knighton (Peoria, Peoria Notre Dame
H.S.).
Rose-Hulman battled to the end scoring a goal at 89:17.
Trevor Creek (Manteno, H.S.) earned the win the goal for Millikin
with three saves.
Millikin men’s soccer picked up its fourth win at home on September
15 defeating Concordia-Chicago 5-0. The Big Blue maintained its five
goals per game average, which has Millikin ranked second in NCAA
Division III in scoring offense.
Millikin got the scoring going in the 62nd minute when junior Ben
Spelman (Sligo, Ireland) scored with the assist going to Hunter
Somers (Heyworth, University H.S.). Millikin would score again seven
minutes later when a long pass from Fred Bartuch (Frankfort, Lincoln
Way Central H.S.) set up Patrick Dolan (St. Louis, Mo., St. John
Vianney H.S.) for a goal. Mathieson scored in the 74th minute on
assist from Oliver Czopek (Oswego, Oswego East H.S.). Three minutes
later Millikin would go up 4-0 on a goal from Knighton. Takunda
Jakachira (Harare, Zimbabwe) scored Millikin’s final goal at the
83:38 mark.
Millikin will look to go 6-0 on Sept. 20 when they travel to
Principia.
Big Blue Volleyball Improves to 9-3
The 24th ranked Millikin volleyball team went 3-1 at the DePauw
University Tigers Invitational played on Sept. 17-18 in Greencastle,
Indiana. Millikin is now 9-3 on the year.
Millikin went 1-1 in action on Saturday. The Big Blue opened the day
with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-10) loss to sixth ranked Hope College.
Millikin was led by Alora Goodey (Lincoln, H.S.) with eight kills.
The win improved Hope to 10-1 on the year.
Millikin bounced back to defeat DePauw 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-15).
The Tigers entered the match with a 10-2 record and were flying high
after upsetting Hope on Friday night. Erin Syversen (Pewaukee, Wis.,
Waukesha West H.S.) led the way for Millikin with 16 kills and 16
digs. Goodey had 10 kills. Cassidy Kingery (Heyworth, H.S.) had 16
digs and an ace. Emily Mihalkanin (Willowbrook, Hinsdale South H.S.)
had 15 assist and 10 digs. Rose Syversen (Pewaukee, Wis., Waukesha
West H.S.) had a team high 20 assists.
Millikin won twice on Friday opening with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13,
25-18) win over Trine University. Erin Syversen led Millikin with 12
kills and seven digs. Rose Syversen had 18 set assists and two
service aces. Mihalkanin had 18 assists, seven digs and two aces.
Emily Seegmiller (Arthur, Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond H.S.) had
six kills and a team high four service aces. Kingery led the Big
Blue in digs with 13.
The Big Blue defeated Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 3-0
(25-18, 25-10, 25-19) in their second match. Seegmiller led the Big
Blue with 11 kills and 11 digs. Erin Syversen had 10 kills and 10
digs. Mihalkanin had a team high 21 assists 7 digs and four kills.
Kingery had a team high 25 digs.
Kingery and Goodey earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
Millikin will open play in the College Conference of Illinois and
Wisconsin (CCIW) on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when they host North Park
University at 7 p.m.
Millikin Women’s Soccer Update
The Millikin women’s soccer team lost to Rose-Hulman 1-0 on
September 17 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois. The
Engineers scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute.
The Big Blue women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at Monmouth
College on September 14 in Monmouth, Illinois. Darkness prevented
the teams from playing any overtime sessions with the game tied at
the end of regulation.

Millikin sophomore Cassidy Burroughs’ (Greensboro, N.C., Greensboro
Day H.S.) goal in the final minute of the first half gave the Big
Blue a 1-0.
Millikin split time in goal with Kaitlyn Garza (Aurora, Colo., Eagle
Crest H.S.) recording five saves in the first half and Anna
Benvenuto (West Allis, Wis., PIUS XI H.S.) stopping seven shots in
the second period.
Millikin falls to 2-2-1 on the year.
Rogers Seventh at Big Blue Fall Classic
Millikin’s Haley Rogers (Decatur, St. Teresa H.S.) finished tied for
seventh the 2016 Big Blue Fall Classic played in Decatur, Illinois
on Sept. 16-17. The opening round was at Hickory Point Golf Course
with Saturday’s final round at Red Tail Run.
Rogers shot 165 (83-82) for Millikin’s best finish. Viterbo won the
team competition with a two-day total of 646. Millikin was seventh
at 817.
Millikin Men’s Golf Recap
The Millikin men's golf team finished in seventh place at the
Midwest Region Classic played on September 17-18 at the Eagle Ridge
Resort in Galena, Illinois.
Big Blue senior Blaine Buente (Troy, Triad H.S.) finished tied for
second with a 146 (69-77) two shots behind Dylan Kline of
Wisconsin-Stout 144. Millikin had a team total of 620 (304-316) to
finish 11 shots behind the tournament winner Luther College.
The Millikin men finished in 13th place at the Rhodes College Fall
Classic played at Tunica National in Tunica, Mississippi on Sept.
11-12.
The Big Blue shot a two day total of 612 (302-310). Texas@Tyler was
the winner with a 578. Entering the second round, Buente was tied
for second place at three under, but he shot a 78 in round two
falling into a tie for 15th. Buente’s two day total was 147 (69-78).
Millikin Men’s Tennis Plays Well at CCIW Fall Invite
The Big Blue men's tennis team welcomed five other CCIW schools to
the Fairview Park Tennis Center as they hosted the 2016 CCIW Fall
Invitational tournament. Joining Millikin was Carroll University,
Carthage College, Augustana College, Illinois Wesleyan University, &
North Central College.
Millikin's top performers were sophomores Jacob Hamilton (Swansea,
Belleville East H.S.) and Greg Schwoeppe (Fishers, Ind., Hamilton
Southeastern H.S.). Hamilton won the third singles flight, winning
all his matches in straight sets. Schwoeppe, who played the most
three set matches on the team last year, is off to a quick start to
win that title again. Schwoeppe won all three of his singles matches
in three sets, defeating teammate Dane Pierantoni in the final.
Freshman Jacob Palley (River Forest, Oak Park & River Forest H.S.)
made the finals of the first singles flight. Palley defeated Pawel
Jaworski in a three set match on the opening day before falling in
the final to Carthage's top player, Herman Abban in straight sets.
Millikin’s Colin Sandgren (Forsyth, LSA H.S.) made the finals of the
second singles flight. Sandgren defeated Kurt Meyer in the first
round & Lukasz Jaworski in his second match, before falling to Chris
Conley of Carthage.
