The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired veteran left-hander Phil Coke from
the New York Yankees on Thursday for cash considerations.
Coke 34, has not pitched in the majors for the New York Yankees
since May 16. He had a 6.00 ERA in three relief appearances before
being sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Coke went 5-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 23 games (11 starts) at
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Coke has a 22-27 record and 4.23 ERA in 404 career major-league
games with the Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays and
Chicago Cubs.

Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka has been scratched from his next
start with a strain to his right forearm. Tanaka earned the win in
Wednesday's 11-5 win over the Rays, but also gave up four solo home
runs in the third inning.

New York Mets left-hander Steven Matz was scratched from his
scheduled start Friday because of a left shoulder injury and is
unlikely to pitch again this season. Matz, who has been on the
disabled list since Aug. 23, threw a bullpen session Wednesday but
reported soreness Thursday. Gabriel Ynoa will start instead.

Miguel Sano of the Minnesota Twins played for the first time
since Sept. 12. He had been sidelined with a back injury.

Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler still was not ready to
return after experiencing concussion-like symptoms, manager Brad
Ausmus said. Detroit hopes Kinsler might return to action Friday
against Kansas City.

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun is scheduled to return to
the starting lineup on Friday after missing three games to be with
his wife for the birth of their son.

Houston Astros television broadcaster Bill Brown announced his
retirement effective at the end of this season. Brown, who joined
the club in 1987, will call his final game next Wednesday against
the Seattle Mariners.

Rookie left-hander Jayson Aquino was not available for the Baltimore
Orioles for a second straight game due to a viral infection.
