This week: Nearly a month after the season-opening race at St. Petersburg, Fla., the second of the 17-race 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule takes place this Sunday at one of its most popular venues, the Long Beach (Calif.) street course. ... Simon Pagenaud is the defending champion who used this race win, as well as several others, to parlay himself into the 2016 IndyCar championship. ... The 2017 season began with a big upset, as Sebastien Bourdais, in his first race for Dale Coyne Racing, took the checkered flag in the March 12 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Pagenaud finished second, followed by Scott Dixon. ... Points leaders (after one race): Bourdais (53 points), Pagenaud (41), Scott Dixon (35), Ryan Hunter-Reay (32), Takuma Sato (31).
