[April 06, 2017] April 5 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's Major League Baseball games:

Indians 9, Rangers 6

Francisco Lindor smashed a ninth-inning grand slam to lift the Cleveland Indians past the Texas Rangers 9-6 on Wednesday night.

Lindor recorded the first two-homer game of his career and drove in a career-high five runs.

The win gave the Indians their first 3-0 start since 1998. Texas is 0-3 for the first time since 2007 and 0-3 at home for the first time since 1991 after getting swept in the series.

Cole Hamels allowed four runs (three earned) in six innings after starting the game with three perfect frames for the Rangers. Danny Salazar struck out nine but gave up five runs (four earned) in 5 2/3 innings for the Indians.

Dodgers 3, Padres 1

Yasiel Puig homered and Rich Hill threw five strong innings as Los Angeles beat San Diego. The Dodgers got an RBI double from Adrian Gonzalez to go with an unearned run as they rebounded from being blanked by the Padres in the previous game.

Hill surrendered one run on two hits and three walks, with five strikeouts.

Trevor Cahill, in his Padres debut, worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two unearned) on five hits. He walked three with seven strikeouts. It was Cahill's second start in his last 51 outings.

Diamondbacks 8, Giants 6

Pinch hitter Jeremy Hazelbaker sent Matt Moore's final pitch of the game into the right field corner to break a sixth-inning tie, and Arizona went on to defeat San Francisco.

Moore pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) and eight hits. He struck out three and walked two in the losing effort for the Giants.

Taijuan Walker pitched six innings, allowing four runs and seven hits. He struck out seven and walked one for the Diamondbacks.

Angels 5, Athletics 0

Los Angeles defeated Oakland but got a scare when Garrett Richards had to leave the game with right biceps cramping in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Richards blanked the A's on three hits over 4 2/3 innings in his first start since May 1 last season, which ended early for him because of a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Kole Calhoun went 3-for-5 and scored a run for the Angels, who beat the A's for the second straight time after losing to them on Opening Day.

Red Sox 3, Pirates 0 (12 innings)

Sandy Leon hit a walk-off three-run homer with one out in the 12th inning as Boston beat Pittsburgh in Chris Sale's Red Sox debut at Fenway Park.

Leon launched an 0-1 fastball off Pirates reliever Anthony Bastardo into the Green Monster seats in left field. It was his first career game-winning RBI.

Sale threw seven scoreless innings for Boston, and Pittsburgh's Jameson Taillon tossed seven shutout innings, too.

Twins 9, Royals 1

Miguel Sano hit a three-run triple, and Eduardo Escobar added a three-run homer in a six-run seventh inning as Minnesota cruised past Kansas City.

Jason Castro walked a career-high four times for the Twins, who opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 2007.

Ian Kennedy walked five batters, leading to three runs. He gave up five hits and recorded five strikeouts in five innings for the Royals.

Nationals 6, Marlins 4

Matt Wieters had three hits and drove in two runs, Bryce Harper added two hits and two RBIs, and Washington beat Miami.

Nationals starter Tanner Roark allowed two runs in the first inning before bouncing back. He gave up just the two runs through six innings.

The losing pitcher was Dan Straily, who gave up five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings for the Marlins.

Orioles 3, Blue Jays 1

Adam Jones and Chris Davis both homered, and starter Dylan Bundy threw seven solid innings as Baltimore scored a victory over Toronto, completing the sweep of a two-game series.

Jones (two-run shot) and Davis (solo) each hit their first homers of the season, both off Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ.

Bundy allowed one run on four hits in a career-best seven innings.

Reds 2, Phillies 0

Joey Votto homered and Brandon Finnegan allowed one hit through seven innings, lifting Cincinnati over Philadelphia.

Finnegan, 23, is among the centerpieces of a Reds' rebuild, and he was outstanding Wednesday, retiring the final 19 batters he faced and striking out nine.

Raisel Iglesias earned the save.

Rays 4, Yankees 1

Tampa Bay got a strong outing from Alex Cobb and enough offense early to pull out a win over New York at Tropicana Field, taking two of three games in the opening series of the season.

Cobb, making his way back from 2015 Tommy John surgery, held the Yankees to four hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and continuing his strong personal success against the Yankees.

Corey Dickerson led off the first with a home run and added an RBI single in the second, with No. 9 hitter Derek Norris bringing in the other runs with a two-out single in the second for the Rays.

Braves 3, Mets 1 (12 innings)

Matt Kemp hit a bases-loaded, two-run double with two outs in the top of the 12th inning, lifting Atlanta over New York.

Kemp collected two doubles and a walk before getting the tiebreaking hit off Rafael Montero. Kemp put the Braves in front one pitch after the Mets opted to intentionally walk Freddie Freeman.

Four Braves relievers combined on six scoreless innings after Bartolo Colon allowed one run and two hits in a crisp six innings.

Astros 5, Mariners 3 (13 innings)

George Springer blasted a 3-2 pitch into the front row of the Crawford Boxes in the 13th inning for a three-run, walk-off home run as Houston defeated Seattle.

The Astros are off to their first 3-0 start since the 2001 season.

Kyle Seager gave Seattle a lead with a bases-loaded walk in the tip if the 13th, but Chase De Jong, the ninth Mariners pitcher of the night, couldn't hold the advantage in his major league debut.

Brewers 6, Rockies 1

Jonathan Villar, Eric Thames and Travis Shaw all hit their first home runs of the season and Wily Peralta threw five shutout innings as Milwaukee claimed its first victory of the season, beating Colorado at Miller Park.

Peralta scattered three hits and a walk. Tyler Chatwood worked six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five for the Rockies.

Mark Reynolds had two hits for Colorado.

Cubs at Cardinals, ppd.

The game between Chicago and St. Louis at Busch Stadium was postponed due to the threat of severe weather. The teams will try again Thursday.

Tigers at White Sox, ppd.

The game between Detroit and Chicago was called due to rainy weather approximately four hours before the scheduled first pitch. A makeup game will be played Thursday.
