April 10 (The Sports Xchange) -
Highlights of Monday's Major League Baseball games:
Padres 5, Rockies 3
Wil Myers hit for the second cycle in San Diego history and the
first of his career on Monday as the Padres beat the Colorado
Rockies 5-3.
Myers singled in the first, doubled home a run in the third, homered
in a three-run sixth and tripled in the eighth. The other Padres
cycle was also accomplished at Coors Field, by Matt Kemp on Aug. 14,
2015.
Myers' cycle was the eighth by a Rockies' opponent at Coors Field
and the 15th there overall.
Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run homer for the Padres, who got a superb
spot start by Jarred Cosart followed by fine relief work as they
evened their record at 4-4 with their third win in the past four
games. The Rockies have lost two straight.
Cubs 3, Dodgers 2
Anthony Rizzo lined a game-winning RBI single to left with two outs
in the ninth inning, giving Chicago a victory over Los Angeles in a
rain-delayed game.
Rizzo hit a 1-1 pitch from Dodgers reliever Kenley Jansen to score
Jon Jay from third and send the Dodgers to their third loss in four
games. It was Rizzo's sixth career walk-off RBI.
The win capped a banner night as the Cubs raised their 2016 World
Series flag and National League pennant in pre-game ceremonies in
front of an appreciative crowd of 41,166.
Yankees 8, Rays 1
Michael Pineda retired the first 20 hitters and struck out 11 in 7
2/3 electrifying innings, and New York hit three home runs in a
victory over Tampa Bay Rays.
Pineda (1-1) worked quickly and often used off-speed pitches during
his seventh career double-digit strikeout game.
Aaron Judge, Chase Headley and Starlin Castro went deep for the
Yankees.
Tigers 2, Red Sox 1
Nick Castellanos squeezed a ground ball through the left side to
score Andrew Romine from second base with two out in the eighth
inning and give Detroit a victory over Chris Sale and Boston.
Justin Wilson (1-0) got Detroit's third win in the four-game series
after pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Francisco Rodriguez gave
up a leadoff single in the ninth but retired the side to notch his
second save.
Athletics 2, Royals 0
Rookie Jharel Cotton rebounded from a rough initial start to pitch a
gem as Oakland won in Kansas City's home opener.
The A's have won seven straight games against the Royals. Kansas
City lost a home opener for the first time since 2012. The Royals
were shut out in their home opener for the first time since Bert
Blyleven blanked them in 1971.

Cotton (1-1) threw seven scoreless innings, walked
three and struck out six, including the side in the fourth. He threw
61 strikes in 98 pitches. Cotton allowed only two runners to reach
second base.
Giants 4, Diamondbacks 1
San Francisco took advantage of pitcher Matt Moore's swinging bunt
to score three runs in a two-error play that led directly to a
victory over Arizona in the home opener at AT&T Park.
Moore teamed with closer Mark Melancon to cool the hot-hitting
Diamondbacks, who had begun the series with a five-game winning
streak while leading the major leagues in several offensive
categories, including runs (48).
Nationals 14, Cardinals 6
Stephen Drew had three hits and drove in four runs, Bryce Harper had
four hits and two walks, and Adam Eaton had three hits and three
RBIs as Washington came from behind three times to win.
Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and Jayson Werth and Matt Wieters each
added two for the Nationals, who had 19 hits to overcome an ugly
four-error night.
Stephen Piscotty had two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, and
Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter added two hits.
Mariners 6, Astros 0
James Paxton tossed seven shutout innings and struck out eight to
get the win in Seattle's home opener.
Seattle's Nelson Cruz highlighted his three-hit performance with a
two-run single in the fifth inning. Mitch Haniger had two hits,
including an RBI single.
Mets 4, Phillies 3
Jay Bruce hit two homers, including a go-ahead, two-run, two-out,
eighth-inning shot to right field, to send New York to victory.
Mets reliever Jerry Blevins (1-0) earned the win, and Addison Reed
got his second save in as many nights despite allowing a solo home
run to Phillies first baseman Brock Stassi, his first career long
ball.
Reds 7, Pirates 1
Eugenio Suarez and Scooter Gennett each hit solo homers, and
Cincinnati took advantage of five walks to get the road win.
Pittsburgh's Tyler Glasnow (0-1) had a rough 2017 debut. He gave up
five runs and four hits with five walks and a strikeout in 1 2/3
innings. [© 2017 Thomson Reuters. All
