April 26 (The Sports Xchange) -
The Seattle Mariners placed ace right-hander Felix Hernandez and
rookie right fielder Mitch Haniger on the 10-day disabled list
Wednesday.
Hernandez, who is dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder,
allowed four runs and six hits in two innings of Tuesday's 19-9 loss
to the Detroit Tigers. The 2010 American League Cy Young Award
winner and six-time All-Star owns a 2-2 mark with a 4.73 ERA in five
starts this season.
Hernandez is expected to be sidelined for at least two to three
weeks, MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi reported, citing a source.
Haniger sustained an oblique strain after hitting a single in the
third inning of Tuesday's contest. The 26-year-old is batting .338
and leads the American League in runs (20) heading into Wednesday's
action.

Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu left Wednesday's game
against the Kansas City Royals with a mild right hip flexor strain
sustained while attempting to backhand a ground ball in the top of
the fifth inning.
After failing to field the ball cleanly, Abreu remained on the
ground before being examined by team trainers.
Abreu, who had an RBI double in the first inning and another double
in his next at-bat, was able to limp off the field. He was replaced
at first base by Todd Frazier.
Abreu, who is considered day-to-day by the team, will be
re-evaluated in Detroit when the White Sox visit the Tigers this
weekend.

Gift Ngoepe is another step closer to becoming the
first African-born player to compete in Major League Baseball after
the Pittsburgh Pirates recalled the infielder from Triple-A
Indianapolis.
Right-hander Dovydas Neverauskas was sent to Indianapolis to open a
roster spot for the 27-year-old Ngoepe, who is from Pietersburg,
South Africa. Ngoepe is being called up on the heels of David Freese
sustaining a hamstring injury.
Ngoepe, who was signed as a non-drafted free agent as an 18-year-old
on Sept. 29, 2008, is batting .241 with four RBIs in 15 games this
season with Indianapolis.
The 24-year-old Neverauskas became the second Lithuanian-born player
to compete in the majors in 74 years after allowing one earned run
in two innings against the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. (Editing by
