Wednesday morning at the Logan County Fair, Department O judging
took place for entries of dairy and culinary items including pies,
pastries, quick breads, yeast breads, and cookies made with honey.
Other categories included canned fruits, vegetables, pickles,
sauces, preserves, jellies, and jams-butters.
Mary Ellen Martin is superintendent and Nancy and Gena Read and
Megan Opperman serve as assistant superintendents. Several youth
helped bring entries to the judge then set the winning ones up in
the display case.
The judge was Rose Yake Lazzeri, a home economics teacher from New
Berlin who has been judging dairy and culinary entries at the fair
for many years. She considers the taste of the item as well as
appearance.
The many entries gave her a lot to choose from. For the second year
in a row, cookies made with honey and no icing were one of the
categories. Honey has become a somewhat popular substitute for sugar
and replacing sugar with honey can give better results with cooking.
Sasse's honey was given to the winner in this category.
