Dodgers 6, Mets 0
Yu Darvish threw seven scoreless innings in his first start for Los
Angeles and Chase Utley continued to torment the New York Mets by
hitting a two-run homer in the seventh inning of the Dodgers' 6-0
win on Friday at Citi Field.
The scorching Dodgers won for the 42nd time in their last 49 games
dating back to June 7. The Mets lost for the fifth time in six
games.
Darvish, who was acquired from the Texas Rangers in exchange for
three prospects seconds before the trade deadline Monday, allowed
just three hits and one walk while striking out 10. The win was the
first since June 12 for Darvish, who was 0-5 with a 5.81 ERA in his
final eight starts for the Rangers.
Darvish received the only support he'd need when Chris Taylor
homered leading off the first against Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom
(12-5). Yasiel Puig homered in the second and Justin Turner hit into
a run-scoring play in the fifth.
Tigers 5, Orioles 2
Justin Upton hit a grand slam off Mychal Givens in the top of the
eighth inning, and starter Justin Verlander gave Detroit seven solid
innings against Baltimore.
The Tigers, who have won four in a row, were trailing 2-1 when
Givens came on in the eighth. He gave up two singles and then walked
Jim Adduci -- who homered in the first -- to load the bases.
Upton then belted a grand slam to left on the first pitch from
Givens (7-1). That put the Tigers on top, 5-2. This was Upton's
third grand slam of the season, the last coming on July 30 versus
Houston. Upton now has hit seven career grand slams.
Reds 3, Cardinals 2
Joey Votto doubled and drove in two runs and Asher Wojciechowski
allowed a run and three hits through five innings, lifting
Cincinnati to a victory over St. Louis in the opener of a three-game
series.
Rookie Jesse Winker and Billy Hamilton each had a pair of hits for
Cincinnati, which has won six of the past seven games against the
Cardinals and 12 of 18.
Wojciechowski (2-1) walked one and fanned five in his first outing
since being moved into the rotation.
Nationals 4, Cubs 2
Daniel Murphy continues to own Chicago Cubs' pitching.
Murphy went 3-for-4 with two homers, two runs scored and three RBIs
in Washington Nationals 4-2 victory over the Cubs to open a
three-game series between National League Division leaders at
Wrigley Field.
Murphy is now batting .526 with four homers and six RBIs in his last
10 games at Wrigley Field, including postseason play.
Indians 7, Yankees 2
Trevor Bauer pitched seven strong innings and New York's shoddy
defense proved costly for the second consecutive night as Cleveland
rolled to a win.
Bauer (10-8) held New York to one run on seven hits with seven
strikeouts and two walks. In winning the first two of the four-game
series, the Indians' starting pitchers, Corey Kluber and Bauer,
combined to pitch 16 innings, allowing two runs (1.13 ERA), 10 hits,
with 18 strikeouts and three walks.
The Yankees have lost four games in a row and have scored a total of
two runs in the last three.
Braves 5, Marlins 3
Giancarlo Stanton hit two homers totaling an estimated 901 feet, but
the mammoth blasts didn't pay off for Miami.
Nick Markakis' three-run homer, tracked at a normal 388 feet, put
Atlanta ahead in the sixth inning and the Braves beat the Marlins
despite the power display by the Miami slugger.
Stanton's 34th homer traveled 477 feet in the fourth inning and his
35th carried 424 feet into the left-field seats with a man on in the
sixth, both blasts coming off R.A. Dickey knuckleballs.
Brewers 2, Rays 0
Orlando Arcia, hitting ninth in the batting order, had a triple and
home run, scoring the only runs in Milwaukee's win over Tampa Bay.
Brewers rookie Brandon Woodruff (1-0) was superb in his major league
debut, getting out of early jams and throwing 6 1/3 shutout innings
against a team that had just won three straight against the Astros.
Milwaukee won without much help from their bats for the second
straight game and Tampa Bay spoiled a solid start from rookie Jake
Faria (5-2).
Red Sox 3, White Sox 3 (11 innings)
Mitch Moreland hit a walk-off solo home run with two outs in the
11th inning to send Boston past Chicago.
It was Moreland's third career walk-off homer and his 14th of the
season, landing in the Green Monster seats in left field. Moreland
entered the game as a defensive replacement at first base to start
the 10th inning.
[to top of second column] |
Boston ran its winning streak to four games and has
won six of its last eight after a 9-5 win in Thursday's series
opener.
Mariners 5, Royals 2
Jarrod Dyson drove in the go-ahead run in a three-run seventh and
James Paxton picked up his seventh victory in as many starts as
Seattle topped Kansas City.
Guillermo Heredia doubled in the first run in the seventh to tie the
score at 2. Dyson laced a single to right, scoring Heredia. Dyson
stole second and scored on Leonys Martin's two-out single.
Paxton (12-3) has not lost since June 27 to
Philadelphia. He was pulled after 95 pitches and six innings, giving
up two runs on four hits, one walk and two wild pitches, while
striking out seven.
Astros 16, Blue Jays 7
Yuli Gurriel reached base in all five plate appearances, Tyler White
produced four hits and his second career multi-homer game and
Houston bludgeoned Toronto.
Gurriel finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. He
clubbed his 14th home run and added a pair of walks for his first
career multi-walk game.
White went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and was a triple shy of the cycle.
His homers were his first of the season with Houston.
Pirates 10, Padres 6
Gregory Polanco hit his first career pinch-hit homer, a three-run
blast that bounced into the Allegheny River, to highlight a six-run
seventh inning in Pittsburgh's win over San Diego.
Polanco's 434-foot homer, which cleared the stands in right field
off reliever Kirby Yates (2-2), gave the Pirates a 7-6 lead. Adam
Frazier's sacrifice fly later in the inning increased the advantage
to 8-6, and Josh Harrison added a two-run single.
Yates was charged with six runs on four hits in one-third of an
inning.
Diamondbacks 2, Giants 1
Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, leading
Arizona to a victory over San Francisco.
Goldschmidt, who hit a career-high three home runs with a
career-high-matching six RBIs on Thursday in Arizona's 10-8 win over
the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, stayed hot and helped rookie
left-hander Anthony Banda get his first major league win.
Banda (1-1) allowed one run and three hits in six innings in his
second major league start. He was called up from Triple-A Reno and
started in place of Robbie Ray, who's on the seven-day disabled list
with a concussion. Banda struck out seven, walked four and threw 92
pitches.
Rockies 4, Phillies 3
DJ LeMahieu bounced a single into right field with two outs in the
eighth inning helping Colorado to a comeback win over Philadelphia.
Luis Garcia (1-3) began the eighth by walking pinch-hitter Pat
Valaika, who took second on catcher Cameron Rupp's passed ball. With
two outs, Garcia intentionally walked left-handed hitting Charlie
Blackmon to get to LeMahieu, a right-handed hitter.
LeMahieu singled on an 0-1 fastball, sending the Phillies to their
major league-leading 28th one-run loss. It was also their fourth
straight setback on their current eight-game road trip.
Angels 8, Athletics 6
Cliff Pennington and Luis Valbuena had clutch two-run singles and
Los Angeles rallied from a 6-2 deficit to beat Oakland and move
within two games of the second wild card in the American League.
Pennington drove in two runs in the sixth inning to cut the margin
to 6-4 and Valbuena's two-run single tied the score in the seventh.
Yunel Escobar and Mike Trout followed Valbuena's hit with
run-scoring singles to make it 8-6.
The A's bullpen collapsed in the late innings. Reliever Liam
Hendriks allowed two inherited runners to score in the sixth, Daniel
Coulombe walked three straight hitters to start the seventh, and
Blake Treinen allowed all three Angels hits in the seventh.
Twins 8, Rangers 4
Brian Dozier homered twice, Robbie Grossman added a three-run blast
and Bartolo Colon had his first complete game since Sept. 5, 2015,
as Minnesota beat Texas.
Dozier hit his fifth leadoff homer of the season and 24th career to
extend his club record. Grossman's seventh homer of the season came
in a four-run first inning.
Colon (3-9) earned his first win in four starts with Minnesota. The
44-year-old right-hander allowed four runs on nine hits and struck
out five batters. He set down 13 of the final 15 batters he faced. [© 2017 Thomson Reuters. All
