Highlights of Monday's MLB games

[August 29, 2017] (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from Major League Baseball games on Monday:

Indians 6, Yankees 2

Corey Kluber pitched eight strong innings and was supported by four solo homers as the Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees 6-2 on Monday night at Yankee Stadium for their fifth straight win.

Kluber (13-4) allowed two runs, three hits and one walk while striking out seven. He gave up a homer to Chase Headley leading off the third inning and Todd Frazier's go-ahead RBI single in the fifth.

Jose Ramirez hit two homers for the Indians -- their only two hits against Luis Severino before Carlos Santana's blast in the seventh broke a 2-2 tie. Austin Jackson homered in the eighth and Bradley Zimmer had an RBI double in the ninth.

Orioles 7, Mariners 6

Chris Davis lined a tiebreaking RBI double to right in the seventh inning as Baltimore extended its winning streak to five with a victory over Seattle.

The Orioles moved above .500 for the first time since June 11. They sit 1 1/2 games behind idle Minnesota in the race for the second American League wild card.

Ben Gamel had a career-high five RBIs for Seattle. He hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, then lined a two-run single to center in the sixth, tying the score 6-6.

Nationals 11, Marlins 2

Max Scherzer gave up one run in seven innings and Jayson Werth had two hits and blasted a long home run as Washington beat Miami.

Scherzer (13-5) was back from a bout with neck inflammation, pitching for the first time since Aug. 13. He struck out MLB home run leader Giancarlo Stanton (50 homers) in the fourth and sixth after Stanton grounded into a double play in the first.

The Nationals added six insurance runs in the sixth to make it 10-1.

Phillies 6, Braves 1

Aaron Nola returned to form with seven strong innings and added an RBI single as Philadelphia beat Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park.

There was no home run by Rhys Hoskins, the Phillies rookie who was quicker than anybody in major league history to 10 homers, hitting 11 in his first 18 games. However, he did come up with two hits, including the go-ahead run -- his 25th RBI since an Aug. 10 call-up -- in the seventh inning when he followed Nick Williams' double with a double of his own to put the Phillies up 2-1.

Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 5

Christian Vazquez had four hits, including a two-run homer, Drew Pomeranz won his career-best eighth straight decision and Boston held off Toronto.

Eduardo Nunez also homered for Boston, which ended a four-game losing streak.

Pomeranz (14-4) gave up seven hits, five walks and three runs and had four strikeouts in seven innings. He has not lost since June 11. Craig Kimbrel picked up his 30th save despite allowing the 36th homer of the season by Justin Smoak, a two-run blast with two outs in the ninth.

Cubs 6, Pirates 1

Mike Montgomery worked a season-high seven-plus innings and held Pittsburgh to one run in Chicago's victory.

Montgomery (5-6) struck out four, walked none and allowed six hits in his second start since Jon Lester landed on the disabled list. He also had a hit and a run.

Ahead 2-0, the Cubs loaded the bases in the seventh and scored three runs on Alex Avila's two-out infield single. Kris Bryant came home on the hit, and Jon Jay and Ian Happ then scored on two Pirates throwing errors to make it 5-0.

Rays 12, Royals 0

Austin Pruitt and Matt Andriese combined on a two-hitter as Tampa Bay blasted skidding Kansas City.

Pruitt (7-4) gave up a double in the fourth inning to Lorenzo Cain for the only hit he allowed in six innings. Matt Andriese allowed one hit in the final three inning for his first save of the season as Kansas City's scoreless streak reached 43 innings.

Logan Morrison drove in four runs for the Rays.

Tigers 4, Rockies 3

Detroit made an early lead hold up and beat Colorado. The Tigers jumped on Antonio Senzatela with two two-run innings, and five Detroit relievers combined to blank the Rockies for four innings.

Shane Greene worked the ninth for his sixth save in nine chances.

The Rockies fell two games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the race for the first National League wild card. Colorado leads the Milwaukee Brewers by three games and the Miami Marlins by 4 1/2 for the second wild-card spot.

Giants 3, Padres 0

Jeff Samardzija threw his fourth career shutout and first since 2015, and Brandon Crawford and Joe Panik homered as San Francisco beat San Diego.

Samardzija (9-12) allowed only three singles and struck out five in his ninth career complete game.

Panik's two-run homer in the eighth inning gave Samardzija some breathing room, although he didn't need it. Crawford's 12th homer sent the Giants ahead 1-0 in the fourth.

Angels 3, A's 1

Andrew Heaney struck out a career-high 10 batters and Martin Maldonado had three hits to help lift Los Angeles over Oakland at Angel Stadium.

The Angels also got a productive night from Kaleb Cowart, who drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the fourth inning and made an outstanding defensive play in the seventh inning to thwart a potential Oakland rally.

Heaney, who made his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery, went six innings and allowed two hits, one of them a homer by Dustin Garneau.
