Now Chicago Cubs star Kris
Bryant can add ”going really fast” to his off-season adventure
resume.
While in Austria recently on his honeymoon, Bryant visited the
legendary Red Bull Ring, home to top motorsports events such as the
European Le Mans Series, Formula 1 and MotoGP.
Motorsport pro instructor Bernhard Auinger, a former driver in
Formula 3000, showed Bryant the ropes of handling a Nissan 370z. On
a cloudy and slick 40-degree day, Bryant hit a top speed of 111 mph.
Bryant was taught how to choose the ideal line, as well as
techniques for handling curves by making the most of vision and
steering.
In ideal conditions, Bryant also did drift training, which is known
as the highest art of vehicle control. According to the motto “do it
sideways,” it’s a matter of getting the car around the curve as
sideways as possible. It was the ideal playground for that, with
every kind of turning radius and curve combination available, along
with high speed stretches to keep Bryant in high spirits.
“A lot of 360’s,” Bryant noted. “I got the hang of it towards the
end there.”

To cap off the day, Bryant rode shotgun in the KTM X-Bow, an
ultra-light sports car built for road and race use, produced by
Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM. In a race circuit simulation,
the passenger space became a hot seat as Auinger handled the
powerful vehicle on the Red Bull Ring course and hit a top speed of
125 mph.
“My heart was beating a little fast, but super fun,” said Bryant. “I
always wanted to get on the track and see how fast I can go.”
