NFL notebook: Colts let LB Jackson go

The Indianapolis Colts released veteran inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson on Thursday.

Jackson had 78 tackles and one sack in 12 games for the Colts this past season before serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

The 33-year-old Jackson finished his third year with Indianapolis after spending his first eight NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

Jackson has 1,185 tackles, 19.5 sacks and nine interceptions in 141 career games since being selected by Cleveland in the second round of the 2006 draft.

--Danny Morrison, who has served as president of the Carolina Panthers since 2009, has resigned, the team announced.

Morrison came to the Panthers after serving as athletic director at Texas Christian University.

No replacement has been named.

--The Seattle Seahawks signed former Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh, the club announced.

Walsh spent five seasons with the Vikings before being released after nine games last season.

Steven Hauschka, who did the place-kicking for Seattle this past season, is a free agent and struggled a bit in 2016. He was 33 of 37 on field-goal attempts but missed six of 35 extra-point kicks.

-- Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer told team president Michael Bidwill that he will return to play next season, the team announced.

The 37-year-old Palmer hinted that he would return for the 2017 season but delayed a final decision until he determined how his body responded to the beating he took this past season.

Palmer's 2017 salary of $15.5 million becomes fully guaranteed Friday. He is signed through the 2018 season.

This past season, Palmer was sacked 40 times.

--Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle has been charged with assaulting a fellow inmate in the Sedgwick County (Kan.) jail.

Randle received aggravated battery and disorderly conduct charges on Wednesday stemming from a confrontation last week, the Wichita Eagle reported. The 25-year-old has five criminal cases pending against him in the county, where he has been jailed since June.

The Cowboys released Randle in November 2015 reportedly due in part to his involvement in sports gambling. Randle has denied the allegation.

--New England Patriots veteran defensive end Chris Long took to social media to declare that he planned to skip the championship team's customary trip to the White House.

Long's voyage on Twitter was in response to the New York Daily News' Chuck Modiano, who wrote an open letter urging the 31-year-old to skip the traditional visit. Long provided his answer but took issue with Modiano's tone in the open letter.

Long likely won't be alone as tight end Martellus Bennett, defensive back Devin McCourty and linebacker Dont'a Hightower indicated that they will skip the visit as long as Donald Trump is in office.

--Dean Blandino, the NFL's senior vice president of officiating, released a video explaining that New England Patriots running back James White's overtime touchdown in Super Bowl LI was reviewed.

White's third touchdown of the game came on a 2-yard run at 3:58 of overtime, capping an eight-play. 75-yard drive. The play ended with White's knee close to the ground as he crossed the plane of the goal line.

"The play did go under review, the referee looked at it," Blandino said. "Remember, the ball just has to break the plane of the goal line prior to the runner being down by contact."

--The Detroit Lions signed free agent safety Rolan Milligan to a contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed by the team for Milligan, who spent last year's offseason with the Dallas Cowboys before being released on Aug. 16.

Milligan will compete with fellow safeties Glover Quin, Tavon Wilson, Miles Killebrew and Don Carey for playing time.

--The Houston Texans will pack their bags and hold their 2017 training camp at The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va, the team announced.

The Texans have spent the last 15 seasons of training camp at the Houston Methodist Training Center, which is adjacent to NRG Stadium.
