Highlights of Sunday's NHL games

[February 20, 2017] Feb 19 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of National Hockey League games on Sunday:

Blackhawks, Sabres 1

Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist to help lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Kane reached 20 goals on the season, making him the first American-born player to ever score 20 or more goals in each of his first 10 seasons, according to STATS, LLC.

Ryan Hartman, Marian Hossa, Jonathan Toews and Artem Anisimov also scored for the Blackhawks, who dominated the Sabres from start to finish. Scott Darling made 25 saves.

Kane has 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in 13 career games against the Sabres. Chicago (36-18-5) increased its winning streak against Buffalo to 11 games.

Evander Kane scored for the Sabres, who had a three-game win streak end. Robin Lehner made 32 saves.

Rangers 2, Capitals 1

Mats Zuccarello's 12th goal of the season midway through the third period lifted New York past Washington.

Ryan McDonagh also scored and Henrik Lundqvist picked up the win after stopping 31 shots, including one from Evgeny Kuznetsov on the doorstep in the final minute.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 27th goal of the season for the Capitals. Backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer was strong in net but took the loss despite 28 saves.

Red Wings 5, Penguins 2

Tomas Tatar and Thomas Vanek scored early in the third period to help Detroit skate past Pittsburgh at PPG Paints Arena.

The Red Wings have won two games in a row following a five-game losing streak. They have beaten the defending Stanley Cup champions twice this season despite languishing at or near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

The loss ended a Pittsburgh string of nine games in a row with at least one point. They became the last team to lose in regulation since the All-Star break.

Jets 3, Senators 2

Winnipeg scored two goals in the first period, then hung on to defeat Ottawa at Canadian Tire Centre.

Dustin Byfuglien, Mathieu Perrault and Josh Morrissey scored the Jets' goals, while Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine had two assists apiece. Mark Stone and Zack Smith had replied for the Senators, who got a pair of assists from Erik Karlsson.

Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves for his second win of the weekend for the Jets. Mike Condon stopped 17 shots in the Ottawa net.

Islanders 6, Devils 4

John Tavares and Jason Chimera scored in the first minute of the third period and New York prepared for the longest road trip in franchise history by holding off New Jersey at Barclays Center.

Ryan Strome scored twice and Casey Cizikas and Andrew Ladd added a goal apiece for the Islanders.

Miles Wood, Kyle Palmieri, Steven Santini and Taylor Hall each scored a goal for the Devils.

Predators 4, Blue Jackets 3

Mattias Ekholm's tiebreaking goal at 9:09 of the third period lifted Nashville over Columbus at Nationwide Arena.

Ryan Ellis, Kevin Fiala and Calle Jarnkrok also scored for the Predators, who got two assists apiece from P.K. Subban and James Neal. Juuse Saros made 35 saves in the win.

Zach Werenski, Brandon Saad and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored for the Blue Jackets. Werenski, Alexander Wennberg and Seth Jones each had two assists, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots.

Maple Leafs 4, Hurricanes 0

Curtis McElhinney secured his first shutout as a member of Toronto in a win vs. Carolina at PNC Arena.

McElhinney, who joined the Maple Leafs last month when he was claimed off waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets, made 37 saves in his sixth appearance with Toronto. His record is 3-3 with his new team.

Connor Brown scored twice, while Auston Matthews and Jake Gardner also found the net for Toronto, which won for just the second time in six games. Carolina goalie Cam Ward stopped 20 of 24 shots before he was replaced by Eddie Lack for the final 11-plus minutes.

Lightning 3, Avalanche 2 (OT)

Jonathan Drouin scored unassisted at 2:27 of overtime, and Tampa Bay beat Colorado.

Drouin got the winner when he stole the puck from Matt Nieto in front of Colorado's net and beat Pickard with a backhander for his 17th of the season. Ben Bishop made 27 saves, Brayden Point and Vladislav Namestnikov also had goals for Tampa Bay.

Mikko Rantanen scored early in the third period, Matt Duchene tied it in the final minute of regulation, and Calvin Pickard had 35 saves for the Avalanche.

Bruins 2, Sharks 1 (OT)

Brad Marchand scored a breakaway goal 2:36 into overtime as Boston beat San Jose.

Patrice Bergeron won a defensive-zone draw from San Jose's Joe Thornton and Torey Krug lofted a lead pass to a breaking Marchand, who scored his team-leading 25th goal of the season.

The Sharks lost for the sixth time in eight games but have picked up points in seven of those games. Boston is 4-0-0 under new coach Bruce Cassidy, and the Bruins own two victories over San Jose this month.

Ducks 1, Kings 0

John Gibson stopped 24 shots for his fifth shutout, and Josh Manson scored the only goal as Anaheim topped Los Angeles.

The Ducks moved into a tie for second place in the Pacific Division with the Edmonton Oilers while giving the Kings their third consecutive loss and fifth in six games.

Manson scored 1:19 into the second period. Ryan Getzlaf stole the puck from Kings defenseman Brayden McNabb in the left corner, skated toward the left circle and passed to the onrushing Manson, who converted a wrist shot inside the right post for his second goal of the season.

Flyers 3, Canucks 2

The Flyers scored two power-play goals, Shayne Gostisbehere had three assists, and Philadelphia defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 Sunday night.

Wayne Simmonds, Jakub Voracek and Brayden Schenn scored for Philadelphia (28-24-7). The win snapped a two-game losing streak and was the Flyers' second victory in six games. Philadelphia is two points behind the last Eastern Conference wild-card playoff position.
