The Stags (7-6) dominated the Warriors (9-4) the first half and
held a 28-17 advantage as the two teams headed to the locker room.
Hartem commanded a 46-32 lead at the end of the third quarter and
looked to be cruising.
Athens mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter and the Stags just
managed to hang on for the 57-53 victory.
In the words of Coach Jason Garber, "We played extremely well for
the first two and a half quarters and had a 46-26 lead in the late
part of the third quarter. We had a 14 point lead going into the
fourth quarter and Athens came all the way back and took the lead
with less than minute to go. Athens never gave up and really
pressured us in the fourth quarter and we struggled against the
press. Luckily we were able to hang on for the win."
The Stags were also awarded the traveling Tomahawk Trophy following
the win over Athens.
While each and every player contributes to the team’s success, Coach
Garber did point out that Alec Hayes and Antonio Coit-Kirk both
stepped up and led the way in Tuesday’s big win on the road. "Alec
Hayes played extremely big for us tonight with 27 points and 12
rebounds. Toni Coit-Kirk also had a big night with 11 points 10
rebounds and 5 steals,” said Garber.
