Highlights of National Hockey League games on Monday:
Sharks 5, Avalanche 2
Patrick Marleau scored four goals in the third period, Brent Burns
had a goal and two assists, and the San Jose Sharks beat the
Colorado Avalanche 5-2 on Monday night.
Marleau snapped a tie with the first of his three straight goals in
the third period and notch his fifth career hat trick. It was the
first multi-goal performance of the season for Marleau, who added
another at 16:23 for the first four-goal game of his career.
Martin Jones had 26 saves and Logan Couture and Marc-Eduoard Vlasic
had two assists apiece to lead the Sharks (30-16-2) to their fifth
straight win.
Nikita Zadorov had a goal and an assist and Jarome Iginla also
scored for Colorado. Spencer Martin stopped 21 shots for the
Avalanche, who are 1-13-1 in their last 15 home games.
Capitals 6, Hurricanes 1
Dmitry Orlov scored twice, Braden Holtby made 25 saves and
Washington defeated Carolina at Verizon Center.
Washington, which increased its points streak to 14 consecutive
games (12-0-2), got a goal and an assist apiece from Justin Williams
and Evgeny Kuznetsov.
T.J. Oshie added his 18th of the season -- giving him a goal in four
straight games -- and Lars Eller closed out the scoring. Andre
Burakovsky had three assists and Karl Alzner added two.
Maple Leafs 4, Flames 0
Nazem Kadri scored two goals and Frederik Andersen stopped 26 shots
to earn his second shutout of the season and eighth career as
Toronto breezed to a victory over Calgary.
Mitch Marner and Zach Hyman also scored for the Maple Leafs
(22-14-9), who had lost their two previous games. Marner added an
assist and Nikita Zaitsev had two assists.
Brian Elliott made 24 saves for the Flames (24-23-3), who have lost
three games in a row.

Rangers 3, Kings 2
Mats Zuccarello scored a back-breaking goal early in the third
period to help New York to its third straight victory, a 3-2 triumph
over Los Angeles at Madison Square Garden.
With the teams skating 4-on-4, Kings goaltender Jeff Zatkoff gave
the puck away behind his net to the Rangers' J.T. Miller. Zuccarello
took a pass from Miller and beat Zatkoff with a high shot to give
New York a 3-1 lead.
The Kings have lost four straight games, all in regulation.
Ducks 3, Jets 2
Anaheim used suffocating physical play at both ends of the ice and
some timely efforts from its special teams to beat Winnipeg at the
MTS Centre.
Ryan Getzlaf, who earlier had an assist, scored what proved to be
the winning goal on the power play at 8:48 of the third period. He
deflected a point shot past Winnipeg goalie Ondrej Pavelec.
Logan Shaw and Rickard Rakell also scored for Anaheim, while Andrew
Copp and Nik Ehlers had the goals for the Jets.
Coyotes 3, Panthers 2 (OT)
Tobias Rieder buried a feed from Alex Burmistrov 48 seconds into
overtime and Arizona won its second straight game with a victory
over Florida at Gila River Arena.
Arizona, which also received goals from rookie Christian Fischer and
Ryan White, recorded a season-high 42 shots on goal. The Coyotes
have won four of their past five home games.
Vincent Trocheck and Michael Sgarbossa scored for Florida, which
went 0-2-2 on its four-game road trip and has lost 10 contests past
regulation, the most in the league.
