On Saturday, the Lincoln College Men's Volleyball team split
squads for their trip south to participate in a tournament at SIU-Edwardsville
and play a match at Missouri Baptist University.
The LC "B" team played at 'MO Bap' against their JV team and took a
loss in four sets.
Lincoln rallied in the first set to erase a 22-18 deficit and win it
25-23. The Lynx were sparked by the strong jump serve of freshman
setter Jake Fleming (Richards HS). Fleming scored three points and
recorded two aces during the comeback.
LC was not able to keep momentum however and dropped the next three
sets by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-14.
Freshman Charles Carter (Eisenhower HS) led the Lynx offense with 17
kills. Freshman middle hitter Will Moore (Lake Park) added five
kills and three blocks.
At SIU-E, the LC "A" team went 2-2 to finish second in their pool
and third overall in the eight-team club event.
During pool play, Lincoln defeated teams from SIU-E (25-19, 25-15)
and High Performance Club (23-25, 25-16, 15-8), but fell in three
sets to the eventual tournament champions from St. Louis University
(25-22, 14-25, 15-13).
Lincoln's second place finish in their pool qualified the team for
the Gold Division and a matchup against the St. Ambrose JV team in
the semi-final match.
Lincoln battled St. Ambrose from start to finish, but lost an
extremely competitive match 32-30, 26-24.

On the day, LC was led in kills by sophomore Kyle Murphy (Lake Park)
with 25. Murphy also recorded 32 digs and served 11 points on the
day. Sophomore Greg Scott (North Chicago) had 22 kills and 32 set
assists while junior Michael Wesley contributed 17 points, 15 kills
and 10 blocks.
LC Coach Mark Tippett: "We certainly had a full day of volleyball on
Saturday with both teams in action. We are learning how to play
together and what it takes to win at this level. When we split
squads, it gives more athletes a chance to participate and show what
they can do on the court. I was pleased with the progress I am
seeing from the "B" group. They need to learn to control their
emotions a bit in order to play consistently from start to finish.
The "A" group had a strong day overall against some tough
competition. The match with St. Ambrose was intense and we fought
off some very aggressive serves to push them to the limit. We are
all looking forward to the rematch with them at our gym on February
9th."
Lincoln will be at home on Wednesday evening this week for a match
against Culver-Stockton at 6:00 p.m.
