Highlights of Tuesday's MLB games

[July 19, 2017] July 18 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from Major League Baseball games on Tuesday:

Dodgers 1, White Sox 0

Clayton Kershaw earned his major-league-leading 15th win as he tossed seven shutout innings in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Kershaw (15-2) extended his unbeaten streak to 14 starts since May 6, a stretch that includes 11 victories. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out seven.

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 4 (15 innings)

Hanley Ramirez blasted a one-out homer in the 15th inning to lift Boston over Toronto.

Ramirez, getting his third start of the season at first base, hit the first pitch from Mike Bolsinger (0-3) completely out of Fenway Park for his 15th homer of the season and the third walk-off home run of his career. Hector Velazquez (2-1) worked four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, after being recalled earlier in the day.

Nationals 4, Angels 3

Bryce Harper had his fourth four-hit game of the season and Edwin Jackson pitched seven sharp innings in his first start of 2017 as Washington won its sixth straight game.

Harper hit a home run in the first inning, his 24th of the season, singled in the third and sixth innings and tripled to lead off the eighth, scoring the go-ahead run on Ryan Zimmerman's single.

Cubs 5, Braves 1

Willson Contreras hit a three-run homer to help Chicago to its fifth straight victory.

Javier Baez went 3-for-4 with a homer, but it was the two-out, third-inning bomb from Contreras that proved the difference. Contreras was 1-for-4 with a walk and is 9-for-22 with two homers and seven RBIs in the five games of the current road trip.

Rays 4, Athletics 3

Adeiny Hechavarria and Shane Peterson recorded RBI singles in the ninth inning as Tampa Bay erased a 3-2 deficit to defeat Oakland.

Steven Souza Jr. hit his 20th home run for the Rays, a leadoff blast in the third inning. Khris Davis hit his 27th home run of the season for the Athletics, a two-run shot in the first.

Cardinals 5, Mets 0

Michael Wacha tossed a three-hitter for his first career complete game as St. Louis shutout New York.

Matt Carpenter had four hits -- his 11th career four-hit game -- for St. Louis. Wacha (7-3) allowed only a two-out single to Yoenis Cespedes in the first, a one-out double to Michael Conforto in the sixth and a leadoff single to Conforto in the ninth.

Giants 2, Indians 1 (10 innings)

Eduardo Nunez's RBI single off Cleveland closer Cody Allen with no outs in the bottom of the 10th inning drove in the winning run for San Francisco.

Conor Gillaspie, celebrating his 30th birthday, led off the 10th with a double down the right field line against Allen (0-5). After Denard Span, attempting to sacrifice, bunted for a single, Nunez lined his single through a drawn-in infield and into right field.

Diamondbacks 11, Reds 2

Chris Hermann and Rey Fuentes homered, and Arizona tied a season high with nine extra-base hits while snapping a season-high five-game losing streak.

On a night when they acquired slugging outfielder J.D. Martinez in a trade with the Detroit Tigers, the Diamondbacks saw their struggling offense erupt for six runs in the fifth inning. David Peralta went 3-for-5 with a double and RBI for Arizona.

Orioles 12, Rangers 1

Chris Davis homered twice, including a grand slam, and drove in a career-high six runs as Baltimore banged out four homers to beat Texas.

Davis hit a two-run shot in the first as the Orioles scored six times against the Rangers' Tyson Ross (2-2). The grand slam came off Austin Bibens-Dirkx in the fourth and broke the game open, giving the Orioles a 10-1 lead.

Astros 6, Mariners 2

Evan Gattis belted two home runs and Brad Peacock produced the best start of his career as Houston beat Seattle.

Gattis socked both homers, his ninth and 10th on the season, off Sam Gaviglio (3-5). Jose Altuve finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Astros. Every starter excluding Yuli Gurriel reached base at least once.

Yankees 6, Twins 3

Didi Gregorius had three hits, including a two-run homer in a five-run fifth inning, and New York spoiled Bartolo Colon's Minnesota debut.

Ronald Torreyes added three hits for the Yankees. Aaron Judge had two hits, a walk, two runs and an RBI, and Gary Sanchez added two hits and two RBIs for New York, which has won 11 of its past 14 games against Minnesota.

Pirates 4, Brewers 3

Francisco Cervelli and Josh Harrison homered and David Freese provided the go-ahead single -- all in a four-run sixth inning -- as Pittsburgh rallied past Milwaukee.

The Pirates' Starling Marte received a warm reception in his first game after serving an 80-game suspension for PED use, walking after Cervelli's solo shot and scored on Harrison's blast. Marte made a sliding catch of Ryan Braun's soft line drive to end the first.

Rockies 9, Padres 7

Slumping Carlos Gonzalez drove in three runs and Mark Reynolds ended a long homer drought as Colorado held off San Diego.

After the Padres struck for three runs in the first, Reynolds hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning. It was his 20th homer but first in 55 at-bats since June 26.

Tigers 9, Royals 3

Nicholas Castellanos had four hits, including a pair of solo home runs, and drove in five runs as Detroit beat fading Kansas City.

The four hits and five RBIs equaled career highs for Castellanos. He tripled home a pair of runs to cap off a five-run second inning. Castellanos homered in the fifth and seventh innings and his eighth-inning two-out single scored Dixon Machado.

Phillies 5, Marlins 2

Maikel Franco's home run overshadowed another shot by Giancarlo Stanton as Philadelphia defeated Miami.

Franco's solo blast to left-center field broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. It was his 14th homer of the season and his fourth this month while his past three homers have broken deadlocks.
