Highlights of Sunday's MLB games

[July 24, 2017] July 23 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from Major League Baseball games on Sunday:

Dodgers 5, Braves 4 (10 innings)

Logan Forsythe hit a bases-loaded, walk-off single in the 10th inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.

Despite the win, the Dodgers got some bad news, as ace Clayton Kershaw left the game after two innings with right lower back tightness. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw would go on the 10-day disabled list.

Austin Barnes and Cody Bellinger homered for the Dodgers, but Kenley Jansen blew a save by giving up a three-run homer to Matt Adams that tied the game at 4 in the ninth inning. Jansen was perfect in his first 24 save opportunities but couldn't get the four-out save on Sunday.

Cubs 5, Cardinals 3

Willson Contreras snapped a tie with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, leading Chicago to a victory over St. Louis and a tie for first place in the National League Central.

The Cubs caught Milwaukee in the division with their eighth victory in nine games. Chicago has made up a 5 1/2-game deficit on the Brewers since the All-Star break. The Cardinals absorbed their fourth loss in five games.

Cubs starter Jose Quintana, 2-0 since coming from the Chicago White Sox on July 13 and 6-8 overall, worked six innings for the victory. He allowed three runs on five hits, walked two and struck out seven.

Nationals 6, Diamondbacks 2

Brian Goodwin homered to start a four-run first inning, and Washington overcame the early departure of star right-hander Stephen Strasburg to beat Arizona.

Wilmer Difo, Washington's No. 2 batter, also homered, and the National League East-leading Nationals coaxed seven innings out of five relievers in their often unreliable bullpen to win for the second time in the three-game series and the eighth time in 10 games overall.

Orioles 9, Astros 7

Zach Britton set the American League record with his 55th consecutive save, Adam Jones tied a career high with four hits, and Baltimore avoided its first home sweep by Houston.

Houston lost for just the second time in the past 14 games against the Orioles.

Britton picked up his first save since April 14 and sixth of the season, breaking Tom Gordon's AL mark for consecutive saves.

Indians 8, Blue Jays 1

Corey Kluber struck out 14 in 7 2/3 innings, and Michael Brantley had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, as Cleveland completed a three-game sweep of Toronto.

Kluber posted season highs for strikeouts and pitches (120) while dominating the Blue Jays' lineup. Kluber struck out every Toronto hitter at least once. After the first inning, 14 of the 20 outs that Kluber recorded were strikeouts.

Francisco Lindor had three hits for Cleveland, and Brandon Guyer hit a three-run double.

Phillies 6, Brewers 3

Jerad Eickhoff collected two hits, pitched six solid innings and was helped by a homer from rookie outfielder Nick Williams as Philadelphia beat reeling Milwaukee.

Williams opened the scoring in the fourth inning after Eickhoff and Brewers starter Junior Guerra were dominant early. After walking Maikel Franco, Guerra left a 1-0 fastball up in the zone that Williams hit the other way to left for his fourth homer in his 19th game in the big leagues.

The Brewers have lost seven of their past eight games.

Athletics 3, Mets 2

Matt Chapman atoned for a baserunning blunder by hitting the tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning for Oakland.

Chapman had two hits, including a leadoff double with the Athletics nursing a 2-1 lead in the fifth. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch by Mets right-hander Rafael Montero but was picked off two pitches later by catcher Rene Rivera, a mistake that was magnified when Jaycob Brugman followed with a single.

However, Chapman redeemed himself in his next at-bat when he crushed a 2-0 pitch by Montero deep into the left field seats.

Rangers 6, Rays 5

For the third day in a row, Texas rallied to erase a two-run deficit and stunTampa Bay.

The Rays led 5-3 in the eighth inning, but the Rangers got a two-run home run from Rougned Odor -- his second of the game -- to tie it, then a solo home run from Carlos Gomez off reliever Brad Boxberger put them ahead.

The Rays entered the series with a 42-4 record when leading after seven innings, but went 0-2 in those situations against Texas, losing another lead in the sixth inning Saturday.

Reds 6, Marlins 3

Scooter Gennett, Eugenio Suarez and Tucker Barnhart homered and rookie Sal Romano allowed one run over six innings, lifting Cincinnati over Miami.

Romano, making his fourth career start, walked one and had a career-high seven strikeouts.

A.J. Ellis homered and doubled for Miami, which failed to complete its first sweep of the Reds in Cincinnati since 2003.

Royals 5, White Sox 4

Brandon Moss hit a walk-off RBI double in the ninth as Kansas City edged Chicago.

Moss' double off Tyler Clippard scored Lorenzo Cain, who was running for Mike Moustakas, who led off the inning with a single.

Kelvin Herrera pitched a spotless ninth to pick up the victory.

Yankees 6, Mariners 4

Didi Gregorius hit two home runs, and New York's bullpen was dominant as New York defeated Seattle.

The Yankees won three of the four games in the series to move into sole possession of the American League's top wild-card spot. Chad Green (1-0), Dellin Betances and David Robertson combined for 4 1/3 innings of perfect relief before turning it over to closer Aroldis Chapman, who yielded two hits but no runs.

Ben Gamel and Guillermo Heredia drove in two runs apiece for Seattle.

Padres 5, Giants 2

Wil Myers homered for the third consecutive day, and Dinelson Lamet (4-4) pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball, propelling San Diego past San Francisco.

Hector Sanchez had two hits, including a run-scoring double, to help the Padres win their fourth consecutive series against the Giants by taking three of four.

Eduardo Nunez had three hits for the Giants. San Francisco starter Ty Blach (6-6) allowed five runs in seven innings.

Tigers 9, Twins 6

Jose Iglesias had three hits, including a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning, as Detroit pulled away late against Minnesota.

Matthew Boyd pitched into the seventh inning to win his second straight start since being recalled from Triple-A. Detroit gained the series win with its 15th victory at Target Field in its past 17 games there.

Ian Kinsler, James McCann and Alex Presley each had three hits for the Tigers.

Rockies 13, Pirates 3

Colorado belted five home runs, including three in one inning, to overwhelm Pittsburgh in the rubber game of their series.

The victory completed a 5-1 homestand for the Rockies, who have won six of their past seven games.

Mark Reynolds hit two homers, and Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story and Pat Valaika each added a home run for the Rockies, who took an early 4-0 lead with a four-run third and blew the game open with a seven-run sixth.

Angels 3, Red Sox 2

Parker Bridwell pitched a career-high seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs as Los Angeles won the series against Boston.

Bridwell made just his seventh start, and the Angels are 6-1 in those seven games. He is 4-1 with a 3.09 ERA, has five quality starts and has allowed three runs or fewer six times.

The Angels hit three homers against Boston's Rick Porcello -- all leadoff shots, by Andrelton Simmons (11th) in the fourth, Mike Trout (19th) in the sixth and Luis Valbuena (ninth) in the seventh.
