MINNEAPOLIS -- George Springer hit two
homers among four hits and the Houston Astros hammered a season-high
six home runs to complete a series sweep against the Minnesota Twins
with a 17-6 victory Wednesday.
Evan Gattis had four hits, including a solo homer, and three RBIs.
Carlos Correa had three hits, including a two-run homer in the first
inning, and drove in three runs. Alex Bregman homered for the third
straight day and Marwin Gonzalez also homered as Houston won its
seventh straight game.
The Astros scored a franchise-record 40 runs in the three-game
series.
Minnesota relievers allowed 28 runs (27 earned) in nine innings in
the three games. The Twins got a solo homer by Eddie Rosario and a
two-run shot by former Astro Jason Castro.
Padres 2, Cubs 1
SAN DIEGO -- Rookie Franchy Cordero tripled with one out in the
eighth and scored on a fielder's choice to break a 1-1 tie and help
San Diego sweep Chicago for its fourth straight victory.
The loss capped an 0-6 West Coast road trip for the Cubs. The Padres
won a fourth straight game for the first time since August of 2015.
Cordero hit a drive off Koji Uehara (1-3) to the gap in right-center
and used his speed to turn a double into a triple. With the Chicago
infield drawn in, Yangervis Solarte hit a hard grounder to second
baseman Ian Happ. Cordero slid in just ahead of the throw to catcher
Willson Contreras.
Orioles 10, Yankees 4
BALTIMORE -- Adam Jones, back after missing four games, hit a
three-run homer and finished with five RBIs as Baltimore defeated
New York.
The Orioles won two of three against the first-place Yankees after
losing 12 of 15 coming into the series. Jones, who had been
sidelined due to ankle issues, had an RBI double in the third inning
before homering in the fourth.
Jones then got his 1,500th career hit with Baltimore in the eighth,
an RBI infield single. He ended up 3-for-5 with two runs.
Chris Davis also homered, a two-run shot in the seventh that made it
9-3.
Nationals 3, Giants 1
SAN FRANCISCO -- Ryan Zimmerman hit a three-run homer in the first
inning and Max Scherzer made it stand up with his seventh career
complete game as Washington swept San Francisco.
The Nationals played without Bryce Harper, who earlier in the day
accepted his suspension after it was lowered from four games to
three on appeal. Harper was penalized for charging the mound Monday
against the Giants.
The win was the 1,799th of Washington manager Dusty Baker's career.
He's second among active managers in wins behind San Francisco's
Bruce Bochy (1,811).
Red Sox 4, White Sox 1
CHICAGO -- Drew Pomeranz pitched seven quality innings and Pablo
Sandoval went 3-for-4 with an RBI in his first start since April 23
as Boston pulled away from Chicago.
Christian Vazquez added a double and two RBIs as the Red Sox took
the rubber match of the series. Pomeranz (5-3) picked up his second
win in a row, limiting the White Sox to one run and seven hits in
seven innings while striking out eight.
Tim Anderson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Anthony Swarzak (2-1)
surrendered four runs and four hits in one inning of relief for
Chicago. He had allowed three earned runs in 23 1/3 innings entering
Wednesday.
Rays 7, Rangers 5 (10 innings)
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Logan Morrison and Derek Norris each hit
10th-inning homers as Tampa Bay, which was one out from defeat,
rallied to victory.
The Rays, who hit four homers, forced extra innings when Kevin
Kiermaier homered off Texas closer Matt Bush with two outs in the
ninth inning to tie the game at 4. Morrison led off the 10th with a
homer off Sam Dyson (1-6) and then Norris added a two-run blast to
left with two outs to push the lead to 7-4.
The homers made a winner out of Austin Pruitt (4-1), who was called
up from Triple-A Durham earlier in the day. Alex Colome worked
around a one-out RBI single from Adrian Beltre in the 10th for his
15th save.
Mariners 5, Rockies 0
SEATTLE -- James Paxton, making his first appearance since May 2,
pitched 5 1/3 innings as Seattle won its fourth straight.
Paxton (4-0), who has allowed one earned run or none in six of his
seven starts this season, lowered his ERA to 1.26. He gave up three
hits and struck out six without issuing a walk. Paxton had been
sidelined because of a left forearm strain.
Colorado rookie Antonio Senzatela (7-2) yielded four runs on five
hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out seven and threw
two wild pitches.
Brewers 7, Mets 1
NEW YORK -- Eric Thames continued snapping out of his slump when he
reached base four times in five plate appearances and hit a two-run
homer in the first inning that launched Milwaukee to victory.
[to top of second column] |
Thames, who broke an 0-for-19 skid Tuesday, finished
2-for-3 with two walks and two runs. He has reached base eight times
in 11 plate appearances in the past two games.
Keon Broxton homered in the second inning for the Brewers while
Jesus Aguilar (run-scoring double), Hernan Perez (two-run single)
and Manny Pina (run-scoring groundout) all collected RBIs in the
fourth inning.
Cardinals 2, Dodgers 1
ST. LOUIS -- Dexter Fowler broke a tie in the eighth inning with a
two-out solo homer to lead St. Louis after Carlos Martinez checked
Los Angeles on four hits in eight innings.
Martinez (4-4) walked three and struck out nine as he ended the
Dodgers' six-game winning streak and lifted the Cardinals to only
their fourth win in 14 games. Fowler pounded a 2-1 slider from
reliever Ross Stripling 429 feet for his seventh homer of the year.
The Dodgers wasted a quality start by Hyun-Jin Ryu. He pitched six
innings, permitting three hits and a run with one walk and four
strikeouts.
Tigers 6, Royals 5
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Victor Martinez and Alex Avila homered as
Detroit rallied from an early three-run deficit to defeat Kansas
City.
Neither starting pitcher lasted long. Royals right-hander Ian
Kennedy (0-5) was removed after three innings and 74 pitches. Tigers
left-hander Matthew Boyd was yanked with two outs in the fourth
after 63 pitches.
Warwick Saupold (1-0) pitched three shutout innings to pick up the
victory. Justin Wilson worked around an Alex Gordon ninth-inning
single to collect his fifth save.
Angels 2, Braves 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Eric Young Jr. homered in the eighth inning to
lift Los Angeles past Atlanta.
Young, playing in only his third major league game this season, hit
his first home run since 2014 while with the New York Mets. He was
called up Monday from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace the injured Mike
Trout.
Young went 2-for-2 and also walked Wednesday and is 5-for-11 with
two stolen bases since his promotion. Matt Kemp belted his 250th
career home run for Atlanta.
Diamondback 6, Pirates 5 (14 innings)
PITTSBURGH -- Chris Owings' single in the 14th inning drove in the
winning run for Arizona in a game that was interrupted for 1 hour,
33 minutes by rain.
Twice the Pirates came back to extend the game on what would have
been their last at-bat. Pittsburgh scored a run in the ninth off
closer Fernando Rodney to send the game into extra innings, and the
Pirates pulled even again on Jordy Mercer's home run off J.J. Hoover
with two outs in the 11th after Nick Ahmed's homer in the top of the
inning gave the D-backs a 5-4 lead.
With two on in the 14th, Owings singled off Pirates right-hander
Jhan Marinez (0-1) to score David Peralta.
Blue Jays 5, Reds 4
TORONTO -- Devon Travis hit a two-run, go-ahead homer in the seventh
inning to help Toronto complete a three-game sweep of Cincinnati.
Luke Maile also hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have won
five of the first six games of a 10-game homestand.
Joey Votto and Scott Schebler homered for the Reds, who ended their
road trip at 3-4. Roberto Osuna allowed a leadoff homer to Schebler
in the ninth but earned his 11th save, stranding runners at second
and third.
Marlins 10, Phillies 2
MIAMI -- Justin Bour homered twice and Marcell Ozuna went deep once
to power Miami past Philadelphia.
Dan Straily (4-3) struck out 10 while allowing two runs (one earned)
in 6 2/3 innings as the Marlins extended their win streak to a
season-high four games, earning their first sweep of the year.
Miami's Giancarlo Stanton missed the game because of cramping in his
left hamstring. The Phillies fell to 6-25 in their past 31 games.
They have been swept four times this season.
Athletics 3, Indians 1
CLEVELAND -- Chad Pinder had three hits, including two home runs,
and Sean Manaea combined with two relievers on a three-hitter as
Oakland halted its four-game slide and Cleveland's three-game
winning streak.
Pinder hit a solo home run in the third inning and a two-run homer
in the fifth to account for all of the Athletics' runs.
Manaea (4-3) allowed one run on three hits, with nine strikeouts and
one walk. Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth inning to earn his
eighth save.
