[June 07, 2017]  June 6 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games:

Reds 13, Cardinals 1

Scooter Gennett became the first player in Reds history to hit four home runs in a game, leading Cincinnati to a 13-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

The left fielder also drove in 10 runs and went 5-for-5, including an RBI single in the first inning. He became the first player ever to collect four homers, five hits and 10 RBIs in a game.

Gennett hit his second career grand slam in the third inning off Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright. He homered twice off John Gant, in the fourth and sixth innings, then went deep off John Brebbia in the eighth to cap an historic night in which he became only the 17th major league player to homer four times in a game.

With the crowd on its feet with two outs in the eighth, Gennett took a called strike from Brebbia, then swung from his heels and missed to make the count 0-2. He lined the next pitch just over the right field wall, sending Great American Ball Park into delirium.

Nationals 2, Dodgers 1

Max Scherzer struck out a season-high 14 as Washington defeated Los Angeles.

Scherzer (7-3), the 2016 National League Cy Young winner, gave up an unearned run in the first inning and allowed three hits with two walks in seven innings. Strikeouts accounted for nine of the initial 10 outs he recorded.

Reliever Oliver Perez worked a 1-2-3 eighth before rookie closer Koda Glover sealed the deal with a scoreless ninth for his eighth save. After Glover fanned Yasiel Puig for the final out, the two players exchanged words, causing both benches to clear without much of an incident.

Royals 9, Astros 7

Mike Moustakas went 4-for-5 with a two-run ninth-inning walk-off homer as Kansas City rallied to halt Houston's 11-game winning streak.

Moustakas hit his team-leading 15th home run against Ken Giles (0-1) with two outs after Salvador Perez singled. Whit Merrifield, who had his 19-game hitting streak snapped Monday, hit a bases-clearing double with two outs in the eighth to make it 7-7 after the Royals trailed 7-1.

Mike Minor (2-1), the fourth Kansas City pitcher, worked a perfect ninth. The Astros' David Paulino allowed three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision.

Red Sox 5, Yankees 4

Craig Kimbrel struck out Aaron Judge on three pitches for the final out and recorded a four-out save as Boston held off New York.

The Red Sox slugged three homers against a struggling Masahiro Tanaka (2-6), who allowed five runs and five hits in five innings and is 0-5 with a 10.50 ERA in his last five starts. Mitch Moreland and Hanley Ramirez went back-to-back in the fourth, and Andrew Benintendi hit a long solo home run in the fifth.

Drew Pomeranz (6-3) made those homers stand by allowing two runs and six hits in a laborious five innings. He won his third straight start despite throwing 123 pitches and reaching several full counts.

Rockies 11, Indians 3

Rookie Antonio Senzatela took over the National League lead in victories, and Mark Reynolds vaulted into the major league RBI lead as Colorado defeated Cleveland.

Senzatela (8-2) threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He also became the third Rockies pitcher to hit a three-run double. The first extra-base hit of his career came after the Indians issued an intentional two-out walk to face him.

Reynolds hit two homers, giving him 24 career multi-homer games and his first this year. He drove in a career-high-tying five runs, giving him 51 RBIs. Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the third for Colorado.

Orioles 6, Pirates 5 (10 innings)

Mark Trumbo hit the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning to lead Baltimore.

Jonathan Schoop tied the game for the Orioles with a two-run homer off Pirates closer Tony Watson in the ninth -- his second of the game. Adam Jones singled with one out in the 10th and took second on a long fly out by Manny Machado before Trumbo delivered a liner to center field off Wade LeBlanc (3-1).

Brad Brach (1-1) threw a scoreless 10th inning for Baltimore, which improved to 8-1 in extra innings. David Freese belted his sixth homer of the season for Pittsburgh to provide an early 4-1 lead.

Diamondbacks 10, Padres 2

Jake Lamb drove in four runs, Chris Owings homered and Robbie Ray won his fourth consecutive start as Arizona routs San Diego.

Lamb hit a two-run double in the first inning and a two-run single in a five-run second inning that was capped by Owings' three-run homer for a 7-0 lead. Ray (6-3) gave up three hits and one run in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out 11 and walked two.

Hunter Renfroe hit two solo home runs for the Padres, who have lost three in a row after a five-game winning streak. Renfroe's homer with two outs in the fourth inning broke up Ray's no-hitter and ended the lefty's scoreless streak at 27 2/3 innings.

Rangers 10, Mets 8

Joey Gallo clubbed his team-leading 17th home run as Texas snapped a four-game losing streak.

[to top of second column]

The Rangers pieced together strong showings from their first two relievers after spot starter Dillon Gee couldn't get out of the fourth inning. The combination of Austin Bibens-Dirkx and Alex Claudio combined to give up a run over 4 2/3 innings with Bibens-Dirkx (1-0) picking up his first major league victory.

New York's offense gave starter Jacob deGrom (4-3) plenty of run support early, with Juan Lagares, Asdrubal Cabrera and Neil Walker each hitting home runs as New York scored in each of the first three innings. Lagares tied his career high with four hits.

Cubs 10, Marlins 2

Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs, and Jake Arrieta turned in his sixth quality start as Chicago defeated Miami.

Arrieta (6-4) allowed two hits, his fewest of the season, and retired 16 straight batters for his first victory since May 21. Arrieta pitched six-plus innings and was charged with two runs (one earned) on two hits. He struck out five and walked three.

Jason Heyward went 3-for-5 for the Cubs, who have won five straight. Rizzo clubbed his 13th home run of the season in a four-run fifth as Chicago erased Miami's early 1-0 advantage.

Mariners 12, Twins 3

Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager hit three-run homers to help Seattle defeat Minnesota.

Seager also had an RBI double for the Mariners, who won their fourth consecutive game and eighth out of nine. The Twins, who lead the American League Central, lost for only the seventh time in 24 road games.

Seattle's Danny Valencia added a three-run double to back left-hander James Paxton (5-0), who was making his second start since a stint on the disabled list with a left forearm strain. He allowed three runs on five hits in five innings.

Angels 5, Tigers 3

C.J. Cron hit a two-run homer as Los Angeles snapped Detroit's four-game winning streak.

Kole Calhoun homered and drove in two runs for the Angels, who are 4-4 since franchise player Mike Trout tore a thumb ligament. Jesse Chavez (5-6) gave up two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings while collecting the victory.

Alex Avila had two hits, including a solo homer, and scored twice for Tigers but struck out with the bases loaded to end the game. Daniel Norris (2-4) gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out seven in six innings.

Phillies 3, Braves 1

Aaron Nola allowed one run over a career high-tying eight innings to help Philadelphia win its fourth consecutive game.

Nola (3-3) gave up five hits and one walk and struck out six. He became the first Phillies starter to throw a pitch in the eighth inning since Jeremy Hellickson pitched a complete-game shutout against the Marlins on Sept. 17, 2016.

Howie Kendrick was 3-for-4 and Freddy Galvis had two hits for Philadelphia. Jaime Garcia (2-4) pitched 7 2/3 innings, the third time in four starts that he lasted at least seven innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits.

Athletics 4, Blue Jays 1

Jesse Hahn came off the disabled list and pitched six strong innings as Oakland defeated Toronto.

Hahn (2-4) ended his career-high-tying, three-game losing streak and won for the first time since April 19 against Texas. He allowed one unearned run on seven hits over six innings with two strikeouts and one walk.

Khris Davis went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run for the Athletics. Jed Lowrie had two hits and scored a run, Ryon Healy had an RBI double, and Rajai Davis and Mark Canha each had a double and scored once for Oakland.

Brewers 5, Giants 3

Chase Anderson took a shutout into the eighth inning, and Hernan Perez hit his seventh home run of the season as Milwaukee defeated San Francisco.

Anderson (5-1) didn't allow a run for the third consecutive start, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out four in 7 2/3 innings. He got plenty of help from his defense, which turned four double plays.

The Brewers collected 11 hits, including 10 off Matt Cain (3-5), who gave up five runs, struck out three and walked two over five innings.

White Sox 4, Rays 2

Yolmer Sanchez, Todd Frazier and Avisail Garcia homered as Chicago ended its five-game losing streak.

Sanchez led off the game with a shot to center field that landed in the field of play but was called a home run and upheld upon review. He stopped at third base but was waved home as if the ball had hit one of the catwalks above the field despite replays seeming to show it didn't hit anything.

Frazier led off the ninth with his ninth home run after Tampa Bay pulled within a run. The Rays' bats couldn't do much to help starter Chris Archer (4-4), who struck out 11 and held the White Sox to five hits and two runs in seven innings.
