June 12 (The Sports Xchange) -
Highlights of Monday's Major League Baseball games:
Pirates 7, Rockies 2
Jameson Taillon, returning to the majors five weeks to the day after
undergoing surgery to treat testicular cancer, pitched five
scoreless innings to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-2 victory
over the Colorado Rockies on Monday.
Taillon (3-1) hadn't pitched for Pittsburgh since May 4, and he
underwent surgery on May 8, but after three rehab starts, he was
ready to get back into major league competition.
The 25-year-old Florida native struck out the first two batters he
faced and wound up fanning five, walking two and allowing five hits
on 82 pitches.
Braves 11, Nationals 10
Tyler Flowers hit a three-run home run off Matt Albers in the top of
the ninth inning as Atlanta whacked five homers and came back to
beat Washington.
The Braves snapped a three-game losing streak in a slugfest that
featured eight homers. The Nationals lost their fourth in a row.
Yankees 5, Angels 3
New York right fielder Aaron Judge heard the MVP chants from the
heavy Yankees-fan contingent, particularly after his two-run home
run in the eighth inning snapped a tie and lifted the Yankees to a
win over host Los Angeles.
The home run off reliever Bud Norris was Judge's
major-league-leading 22nd of the season, but it didn't have to
happen. The Yankees had Aaron Hicks on second base after a double
with one out. But instead of walking Judge intentionally and taking
their chances with Matt Holliday, the Angels pitched to Judge.
Norris fell behind in the count 2-0 before grooving a 91 mph
fastball over the middle of the plate, and Judge hammered it at
least 10 rows into the seats in right-center field.
Mets 6, Cubs 1
Jacob deGrom threw the second complete game of his career, and
Asdrubal Cabrera hit two home runs as New York beat Chicago.
The Mets have won four straight, their longest winning streak since
a season-high five-game streak from April 9-13. The Cubs have lost
five of six.
[to top of second column] |
Red Sox 6, Phillies 5 (11 innings)
Dustin Pedroia singled home the winning run with one out in the 11th
inning and Boston pulled out a victory over Philadelphia, which blew
a 4-0 lead.
The Phillies' losing streak reached six in the first of four
straight interleague games between the teams in two cities.
White Sox 10, Orioles 7
Kevan Smith went 2-for-3 with his first career home run and three
RBIs, and Chicago held on for a win over Baltimore.
Matt Davidson finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs as the
White Sox notched 14 hits. Avisail Garcia added a single, a double
and three RBIs for Chicago.
Mariners 14, Twins 3
For the second time in a week, Yovani Gallardo of Seattle won a game
against Adalberto Mejia and Minnesota.
Seattle's bats roughed up Mejia early and tallied 19 total hits to
rout Minnesota.
Rangers 6, Astros 1
Yu Darvish delivered a strong performance over seven innings, and
Nomar Mazara provided some insurance with a two-out, three-run home
run in the eighth inning during Texas' win over Houston.
Darvish (6-4) allowed just one hit, an RBI single by Alex Bregman,
and three walks while striking out four.
Padres 9, Reds 3
Austin Hedges drove in three runs with three hits, and Franchy
Cordero and Yangervis Solarte homered as San Diego defeated
Cincinnati to give Luis Perdomo his first win of the season.
Perdomo, who was 0-3 after his first 10 starts of the season,
allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts
in 6 2/3 innings to claim the win. [© 2017 Thomson Reuters. All
