Eddie Rosario belted three home runs and Eduardo Escobar matched a
career high with five hits as the Minnesota Twins set a franchise
record with 28 hits en route to a 20-7 victory over the Seattle
Mariners on Tuesday.
Minnesota scored seven runs in the third and seventh innings,
collecting eight consecutive hits in the third. Eight Twins recorded
multiple-hit games with Escobar, Kennys Vargas and Jason Castro
finishing with four hits.
Kyle Gibson (4-4) allowed six runs and 12 hits in six-plus innings
for Minnesota.
The teams combined for a Target Field-record 42 hits.
Seattle catcher Carlos Ruiz pitched the eighth inning, allowing a
run and two hits, walking two and striking out one.
Angels 3, Yankees 2 (11 innings)
Eric Young Jr.'s infield single in the bottom of the 11th inning
drove home Andrelton Simmons from third base to lift Los Angeles
over New York.
Young sent the game into extra innings with a home run in the eighth
inning that made it 2-2. The Yankees loaded the bases with one out
in the top of the 11th before Keynan Middleton (2-0) entered and got
Chris Carter and Brett Gardner to pop out to third.
New York starter CC Sabathia had won five consecutive starts going
into the game, but had to leave after the fourth inning because of a
strained left hamstring. The Angels' JC Ramirez gave up two runs and
five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Red Sox 4, Phillies 3 (12 innings)
Andrew Benintendi ripped a long run-scoring single with one out in
the 12th inning to give Boston a sweep of Philadelphia in the Fenway
Park portion of their four-game series.
It was the second straight walk-off win for the Red Sox over the
Phillies, sending Philadelphia to its seventh straight loss and 28th
defeat in 37 road games. Fernando Abad (2-0) worked the final two
innings for the win.
With one out in the 12th, Xander Bogaerts (three hits) was walked by
Luis Garcia (1-1). Mitch Moreland, who hit a solo home run in the
second inning, singled high off the Green Monster that sent Bogaerts
to third. Benintendi lined his game-winning hit deep into the
right-field corner.
Cubs 14, Mets 3
Jon Lester cruised to his 150th career victory as Chicago crushed
five homers en route to a rout of New York.
Lester (4-4) allowed one run on five hits and one walk while
striking out 10 over seven innings. He is the eighth active pitcher
to reach 150 wins. Ian Happ delivered a grand slam in the seven-run
second inning for the Cubs.
Anthony Rizzo, batting leadoff for the first time, smoked a homer in
the first inning, drew a bases-loaded walk in the second and hit an
RBI double in the third for Chicago. Jason Heyward (two-run homer in
the sixth), Kris Bryant (solo shot in the seventh) and Javier Baez
(two-run homer in the ninth) added blasts.
Nationals 10, Braves 5
Ryan Zimmerman, who missed the previous three games with a bad back,
was 3-for-4, including two homers, and drove in four runs as
Washington snapped a four-game losing streak.
Zimmerman hit a two-run homer off starter R.A. Dickey during a
five-run sixth inning to give the Nationals a 6-5 lead. His homer
came after Bryce Harper had an RBI single to pull Washington to
within 5-4.
Dickey (4-5) allowed eight runs and eight hits (three homers) with
six strikeouts in five innings plus five batters. Ryan Raburn and
Michael A. Taylor had two hits for the Nationals.
Dodgers 7, Indians 5
Cody Bellinger was 3-for-4, with a double, two home runs and four
RBIs, and Clayton Kershaw pitched seven strong innings as Los
Angeles won its fifth straight.
Leading off the eighth inning, Bellinger broke a 2-2 tie by blasting
a 2-1 pitch from Andrew Miller over the right field wall for his
16th home run. In the ninth, Bellinger walloped a three-run homer,
his 17th, off Boone Logan.
Miller (3-1) took the loss, his first loss in 53 appearances for
Cleveland, since he was acquired in a trade from the Yankees on July
31 of last year. Kershaw (9-2) pitched seven innings, allowing two
runs on six hits, with four strikeouts and two walks.
Rangers 4, Astros 2
Rougned Odor homered in consecutive plate appearances in the seventh
and eighth innings as Texas rallied from an early deficit to defeat
Houston.
Odor went 3-for-4 with three RBIs including his 10th and 11th homers
on the season. With two outs in the eighth, Odor followed a single
by Jonathan Lucroy with a two-run, opposite-field homer off the
Astros' Luke Gregerson (2-2).
George Springer and Carlos Correa clubbed their 18th and 12th home
runs in the first and fourth innings, respectively, for Houston,
which has lost six of eight games since its 11-game winning streak.
Pirates 5, Rockies 2
Andrew McCutchen homered twice as Pittsburgh made it two straight
victories over Colorado.
John Jaso added a two-run pinch-hit homer in the seventh inning for
his fourth home run of the season and second as a pinch hitter. He
is 6-for-15 as a pinch hitter this year.
Jaso was pinch hitting for Gerrit Cole, who earned the win (4-6).
Cole snapped a four-start streak of subpar performances, throwing
seven three-hit innings and allowing one run.
Diamondbacks 7, Tigers 6
David Peralta cracked the first pitch of the ninth inning for his
sixth home run of the season to lift Arizona to victory after it
blew a 6-0 lead.
[to top of second column] |
Justin Wilson (2-2) threw a fat first-pitch fastball
that Peralta skipped off the top of the bullpen clubhouse in left
center to save the Diamondbacks, who gave up six unearned runs in
the sixth. Archie Bradley (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for
Arizona's 40th win and one-time Tiger Fernando Rodney recorded his
17th save by pitching the ninth.
Diamondbacks starter Zack Greinke allowed five unearned runs and
five hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Royals 8, Giants 1
Whit Merrifield hit a bases-clearing triple in a six-run sixth
inning and Jason Vargas became the American League's second
nine-game winner to lead Kansas City over San Francisco.
Merrifield and Jorge Bonifacio drove in three runs apiece in a
15-hit attack for the Royals in a matchup of teams that went
head-to-head in the 2014 World Series. San Francisco won the 2014
championship, but Tuesday's win improved the Royals' regular-season
record against the Giants to 11-4.
The Royals scored seven of their eight runs off San Francisco Ty
Blach (4-4), who had allowed a total of only seven runs in his
previous five home starts this season. Vargas (9-3) allowed one run
and five hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out six.
White Sox 6, Orioles 1
Derek Holland allowed one run over six innings while Matt Davidson
hit his first career grand slam as Chicago handed Baltimore its
sixth straight loss.
Holland (5-6) snapped a three-game losing streak as he gave up eight
hits while striking out five and walking a pair. Baltimore
right-hander Alec Asher (2-5) took the loss.
Asher gave up a leadoff single to Jose Abreu, hit Avisail Garcia
with a pitch and walked Todd Frazier to load the bases with none out
in the sixth. That set the stage for Davidson, who clubbed his
team-leading 12th homer of the season.
Padres 6, Reds 2
Clayton Richard came within a pitch of throwing a complete-game
shutout and rookie Franchy Cordero hit two home runs as San Diego
defeated Cincinnati.
Pinch hitter Tucker Barnhart dropped a two-run double into right on
a full-count, two-out pitch in the ninth to end Richard's bid for
the third shutout of his career. Richard (5-7) allowed two runs on
eight hits and struck out six in 8 2/3 innings.
Cordero, who hit his first major league homer Monday night against
the Reds, connected on solo shots of 420 feet (off Reds starter
Scott Feldman) in the third inning and 424 feet (off Tony Cingrani)
in the eighth inning.

1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out eight.

against Aaron Loup, and Evan Longoria had two hits and two RBIs for
Tampa Bay. Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada (4-5) allowed 12 hits,
including two home runs, and six runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Cardinals 6, Brewers 0 (1st game)
Jose Martinez homered twice and drove in three runs as St. Louis
blanked Milwaukee in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
Martinez launched a one-out solo homer to right-center in the fifth
inning off emergency starter Brent Suter (0-1), who to that point
had allowed one hit in his first big league start. An inning later,
Martinez made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly off Wily Peralta,
finishing a two-run outburst. In the eighth, Martinez laced a
436-foot bolt into the seats in left-center for his first
multi-homer game.
Lance Lynn (5-3) allowed three hits over five innings while walking
four and striking out eight for the Cardinals.
Brewers 8, Cardinals 5 (2nd game)
Travis Shaw's tie-breaking RBI single in the eighth inning helped
Milwaukee salvage a split of a day-night doubleheader and snap a
three-game losing streak.
Domingo Santana and Jesus Aguilar led off the inning with walks
against Trevor Rosenthal (1-3) before Shaw lined a 3-2 pitch up the
middle, easily scoring Santana from second. Manny Pina added a
run-scoring single and Keon Broxton tacked on a sacrifice fly, his
third RBI of the game.
Jared Hughes (2-1) got the win despite allowing Matt Carpenter's
game-tying homer in the seventh, his 12th of the year. Corey Knebel
worked the ninth for his ninth save in 12 chances.
Marlins 8, Athletics 1

Oakland.

tied for the team lead with 44 RBIs. The Marlins' Tyler Moore,
playing for injured first baseman Justin Bour, went 3-for-4 with a
pair of doubles and two RBIs.
Jose Urena (5-2), who retired 14 consecutive batters from the second
through the fifth innings, earned the victory. [© 2017 Thomson Reuters. All
