OAKLAND, Calif. -- Khris Davis blooped
a two-run, walk-off hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the
10th inning, leading the Oakland Athletics to an 8-7 victory against
the New York Yankees on Thursday night.
Davis hit a soft fly to shallow center off Giovanny Gallegos (0-1)
that went off the glove of second baseman Starlin Castro, who tried
to make a diving catch. Jed Lowrie went 3-for-5 with a solo home run
and a triple for the A's. Yonder Alonso had two hits, including a
solo home run.
Castro hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the
top of the 10th inning.
Castro had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs.
Chris Carter, a former Athletic, went 2-for-5 with his 13th career
homer against Oakland and drove in two runs. Gary Sanchez went
3-for-3 with a double, walked twice and drove in two runs.
Tigers 5, Rays 3
DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera's first home run since May 20 went just
over the fence into the seats in right field with one out and one on
in the ninth inning to give Detroit a victory over Tampa Bay.
Reliever Tommy Hunter (0-2) gave up a one-out single to Alex Avila
in the ninth and pinch-runner Andrew Romine watched halfway between
first and second as Cabrera's high fly ball on a 97 mph fastball
went into the seats. It was Cabrera's sixth home run this season and
seventh career walkoff.
Closer Justin Wilson (3-2) picked up the win after pitching a
four-batter ninth. The Rays' Steven Souza Jr. launched a 1-0
Francisco Rodriguez changeup into the seats in left with one out in
the eighth to make it 3-3.
Rockies 10, Giants 9
DENVER -- Raimel Tapia stroked a walk-off single to right field with
one out in the ninth inning as Colorado blew a 9-1 lead before
defeating San Francisco.
Mark Reynolds led off the ninth with a single against Hunter
Strickland (1-2). Ian Desmond fouled out. Pinch hitter Carlos
Gonzalez walked on four pitches, setting the stage for Tapia, who
went 2-for-5 with two RBIs after going 4-for-4 on Wednesday.
The Rockies, who are 10-2 in one-run games, led 8-1 after three
innings and 9-1 after six -- a lead that vanished when the Giants
packed eight runs into the seventh, eighth and ninth. The loss was
the 12th in 16 games for San Francisco.
Phillies 1, Red Sox 0
PHILADELPHIA -- Ty Kelly hit a pinch-hit one-out RBI double in the
eighth inning to spoil Chris Sale's strong outing as Philadelphia
snapped an eight-game slide.
Kelly's double scored Andrew Knapp, who singled with one out. Pat
Neshek (2-1) picked up the win while Hector Neris earned his sixth
save. Nick Pivetta threw seven shutout innings and struck out nine
batters -- both career highs.
Sale (8-3) threw eight strong innings in suffering his first loss
since April 27. He allowed one run and four hits while striking out
10.
Brewers 6, Cardinals 4
ST. LOUIS -- Eric Thames' two-run homer in the ninth inning lifted
Milwaukee over St. Louis.
Thames lined an 0-2 pitch from Seung Hwan Oh (1-3) just over the
wall in right field for his 18th homer of the year. It scored
pinch-hitter Jesus Aguilar, who singled with one out to start the
rally.
Carlos Torres (3-4) pitched a scoreless eighth. Oliver Drake,
closing because Corey Knebel was unavailable after notching saves in
the last two games, picked up his first career save as Milwaukee
increased its lead in the National League Central to 2 1/2 games.
Nationals 8, Mets 3
NEW YORK -- Gio Gonzalez and Daniel Murphy continued their mastery
of New York as Gonzalez tossed seven strong innings and Murphy
collected three hits and two RBIs in Washington's rout.
[to top of second column] |
Gonzalez (6-1) allowed two runs on five hits and no
walks while striking out five over seven innings as he improved to
13-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 22 career starts against the Mets. He also
added an RBI single Thursday.
Murphy, who played with the Mets from 2008 through
2015 before signing with the Nationals, went 3-for-5 with a two-run
triple. He is batting .363 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 26 games
against New York.
Indians 12, Dodgers 5
CLEVELAND -- Lonnie Chisenhall had a home run and five RBIs, and
Jose Ramirez had three hits and drove in a pair as Cleveland pounded
Los Angeles.
Edwin Encarnacion and Erik Gonzalez also went deep for the Indians,
with Gonzalez's blast serving as his first career homer.
Encarnacion, who reached base five times on three hits, a walk and a
hit-by-pitch, scored a career-high-tying four runs.
Cody Bellinger and Chris Taylor homered for the Dodgers, who saw
their six-game winning streak halted.
Twins 6, Mariners 2
MINNEAPOLIS -- Chris Gimenez hit two home runs for his first career
multi-homer game, and Jose Berrios continued his strong sophomore
season with a career-high eight innings pitched as Minnesota
defeated Seattle.
Gimenez drove in four runs, while Eduardo Escobar had three hits,
including a homer, as the Twins split the four-game series and
remained two games ahead of Cleveland in the American League Central
before the teams start a four-game series on Friday.
Berrios (6-1) won his third straight decision, giving up two runs on
five hits. He walked one and struck out six.
Royals 7, Angels 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon hit solo home runs
as part of a 15-hit attack as Kansas City won its season-high fifth
straight game.
The Royals continued their offensive surge with 31 hits in a
two-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants earlier this week. Kansas
City has hit 14 home runs during the five-game winning streak and
scored 42 runs, a far cry from April when it averaged 2.7 runs per
game while starting the season 7-16.
The Royals also received another stout effort from a pitcher making
his first major league start. Matt Strahm (2-3), whose previous 42
appearances were in relief, allowed three hits and one unearned run
in five innings.
White Sox 5, Orioles 2
CHICAGO -- Matt Davidson homered in his fourth straight game while
Melky Cabrera went 2-for-5 with two RBIs as Chicago beat Baltimore
in the series finale.
The White Sox took three of four in the series while the Orioles
slipped back below the .500 mark with their seventh loss in eight
games.
Baltimore starter Chris Tillman (1-5) suffered his fifth straight
loss, while Chicago reliever Anthony Swarzak (3-1) worked 1 2/3
innings for the victory.
