D Ruhwedel signs two-year deal to stay with Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to a two-year, $1.3 million contract on Thursday.

 

The deal runs through the 2018-19 season and has an average annual value of $650,000.

Ruhwedel, 27, played in a career-high 34 regular-season games this past season, scoring two goals to go along with eight assists and a plus-9 rating. He also played in six playoff games.

Ruhwedel made his Pittsburgh debut on Dec. 20 against the New York Rangers and scored his first NHL goal three nights later vs. the New Jersey Devils.

The 5-foot-11, 191-pound defenseman spent half of his first season in the Pittsburgh organization with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, scoring four goals to go along with 12 assists in 28 games.

Ruhwedel has appeared in a combined 67 career NHL regular-season games with Pittsburgh and Buffalo, scoring two goals and 10 assists.

Also Thursday, the Penguins signed prospect forward Freddie Tiffels to a two-year, entry-level contract.

Tiffels, 22, enjoyed a successful junior season at Western Michigan this past year, scoring nine goals and setting personal highs with 12 assists and 21 points in 37 games played. Tiffels was Pittsburgh's sixth-round selection in the 2015 draft.
