[March 01, 2017] Feb 28 (The Sports Xchange) - Brendan Smith is headed to New York after the Detroit Red Wings traded the veteran defenseman to the Rangers for a third-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round selection in 2018 on Tuesday.

Smith, 27, had two goals and three assists in 33 games with Detroit this season while battling a knee injury. He is in the final season of a two-year, $5.5 million contract and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Viktor Stalberg is headed to the Ottawa Senators after the Carolina Hurricanes traded the veteran right wing for a third-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Stalberg, 31, totaled nine goals and three assists in 57 games with the Hurricanes this season. He scored a team-high two shorthanded goals for Carolina (25-25-8), which is tied with the Detroit Red Wings for last place in the Eastern Conference.

Michal Rozsival and Jordin Tootoo agreed to one-year contract extensions with the Chicago Blackhawks, the team announced. Their contracts will run through the end of the 2017-18 season.

Rozsival, a 38-year-old defenseman, has one goal and one assist in 51 games with the Blackhawks this season. Tootoo, a 34-year-old right wing, is without a point in 36 games in his first season with the Blackhawks.

The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Mike Weber to a one-year, two-way contract for the remainder of the 2016-17 season.

Weber, 29, has totaled eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 54 games with Iowa in the American Hockey League this season. He ranks second on the club with 92 penalty minutes and third with a plus-5 rating while serving as team captain.

The Buffalo Sabres acquired defenseman Mat Bodie from the New York Rangers in exchange for center Daniel Catenacci.

Bodie, 26, has eight goals and 22 assists this season with the Hartford Wolf Pack and ranks 12th among American Hockey League defenseman with 30 points. He has 20 goals and 78 assists in 196 career AHL games.
