CAPCIL receives $100K for Clinton Food Pantry

[March 13, 2017]  CLINTON - The Clinton Food Pantry administered by Community Action Partnership of Central Illinois (CAPCIL) receives $100,000.

At the February meeting of the CAPCIL board, Attorney Joseph Taylor of Taylor and Lynch Attorneys at Law in Clinton, IL, presented CAPCIL with a $100,000 check towards the Clinton Food Pantry from the estate of William Davenport.

Mr. Davenport was a resident of Clinton, and passed away on July 11, 2016. Mr. Davenport was very generous both in life and in death leaving a large sum of money to many charitable organizations in the Central Illinois area. Mr. Davenport was a retired Marine who had served his country for 20 years.

Attorney Taylor told the CAPCIL board that being able to present $100K to the agency was one of the enjoyable parts of his job.

CAPCIL board president, Steve Lobb of Clinton, remarked at how humbled and honored the agency was to receive such a substantial gift from Mr. Davenport.

Over the past 3 years CAPCIL has been transitioning its services from “handouts” to “hand-ups” to better help their customers successfully become free from poverty. The Clinton Food Pantry administered by CAPCIL, plans to utilize the funds to create a Food Pantry Co-Op. A Food Pantry Co-Op will have persons volunteer a certain number of hours each month as part of the membership requirements. These volunteers will help manage the Food Pantry Co-Op and in turn provide them with resources.

The concept of Food Instability vs. Food Insecurity will be taught among participants of the Food Pantry Co-Op as this aligns with the self-sufficiency mission of CAPCIL. Emergency food assistance will still be provided on an as needed basis.

It is the mission of CAPCIL, in partnership with communities in our service area, to empower persons with low income and the aged by creating and implementing poverty-fighting initiatives for those in crisis and those that endeavor a life of lasting independence.
