Detroit left-hander Matt Boyd pitched
four scoreless innings in his final spring start, and right-hander
Anibal Sanchez gave up one run in four innings in the Tigers' 7-3
victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday at Ed Smith Stadium
in Sarasota, Fla. Boyd beat out Sanchez for the final spot in the
Tigers' rotation. Sanchez will open in the bullpen.
James McCann, Tyler Collins and Omar Infante homered off Orioles
starter Dylan Bundy, who gave up five runs and six hits in six
innings. Chris Davis and Chris Dickerson homered for the Orioles.
Infante has been told he will not make the Opening Day roster.
Red Sox 8, Nationals 1
Dustin Pedroia had two hits and two RBIs, Andrew Benintendi had two
hits and drove in a run for Boston at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers,
Fla. Non-roster right-hander Kyle Kendrick gave up only one run in
four innings three days after he was reassigned to minor league camp
despite going 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA this spring. Treat Turner and Adam
Lind had two hits apiece and Joe Ross gave up four runs in five
innings for Washington.
Twins 6, Rays 6
First baseman Joe Mauer hit his first homer of the spring, Miguel
Sano hit his fourth and Jason Castro had two hits, including his
second homer, when Minnesota and Tampa Bay played to a tie at
Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, Fla. Hector Santiago gave
up one run in 5 1/3 innings for the Twins, Steven Souza and Willy
Adames each had two hits and Joe McCarthy hit his second homer. Jake
Odorizzi gave up three hits and two runs in 3 1/3 innings for the
Rays.
Yankees 14, Phillies 1
New York's Gary Sanchez hit his fifth homer of the spring in a
nine-run first inning against Philadelphia's Jerad Eickhoff, and
Ronald Torreyes had two hits, including a homer, and four RBIs at
Spectrum Field in Clearwater, Fla. Luis Severino, who has won a
rotation spot, gave up five hits and one run in five innings.
Eickhoff did not get out of the first, giving up four hits and two
walks before being removed. Brock Stassi and non-roster invitee
Daniel Nava were told after the game they made the Phillies' Opening
Day roster.
Rockies 10, Padres 5
Reigning National League batting champion DJ LeMahieu had three hits
and two RBIs for Colorado to improve his spring average to .344 in a
win vs. San Diego at Peoria Stadium in Peoria, Ariz. Charlie
Blackmon had three RBIs on the day the Rockies officially announced
that right-hander Jon Gray will start Opening Day. Padres starter
Clayton Richard gave up three runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Rockies No. 2 starter Tyler Anderson gave up three hits and two runs
in three innings for Colorado.

Astros 8, Cubs 6
Josh Reddick had three hits, including his first homer of the spring
and Jose Altuve added his first homer when Houston beat Chicago in
the first game of a two-game exhibition series at Minute Maid Park
in Houston. Brett Anderson gave up four runs (three earned) in five
innings for the Cubs, who got homers from Addison Russell (his
sixth) and Anthony Rizzo (his fourth). Lance McCullers gave up five
runs and struck out six in four innings for the Astros.
Diamondbacks 6, Indians 3
Taijuan Walker struck out four in five scoreless innings and Jake
Lamb had a two-run triple in a three-run fifth inning when Arizona
beat Cleveland in the first game of a two-game series at Chase Field
in Phoenix. Archie Bradley, who will begin the season in the
bullpen, pitched two innings for his first save. Carlos Santana and
Yandy Diaz had two hits for the Indians, and Chris Narveson gave up
five runs (four earned) in five innings. Diaz has 14 RBIs.
Giants 3, A's 0
Johnny Cueto gave up six hits in five scoreless innings, and Brandon
Crawford, Eduardo Nunez and Joe Panik drove in runs in the seventh
inning when San Francisco won the first game of a two-game Bay Area
exhibition series against Oakland at AT&T Park. Mark Melancon
pitched the ninth for a save. A's starter Sean Manaea threw four
perfect innings, striking out two, and Jed Lowrie and Rajai Davis
had two hits apiece.
Angels 3, Dodgers 2
C.J. Cron's two-run single put the Los Angeles Angels ahead and
Cameron Maybin followed with an RBI single in a three-run seventh
inning to beat the Dodgers in the first game of the annual
three-game freeway series, the first two to be played at Angel
Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. Andrew Toles had two hits and an RBI, and
Austin Barnes homered in the ninth. Kenta Maeda pitched three
scoreless innings for the Dodgers. The Angels used nine pitchers in
a bullpen game started by Yusmeiro Petit.
