Giorgi, ranked 90th, won for the first time in four matches
against the world No. 3, who suffered her earliest defeat since
last June. Pliskova reached the final of the U.S. Open last year
before losing to Angelique Kerber of Germany in three sets.
"I'm happy about my performance," said Giorgi, who has slipped
to No. 99 in the world. "I had some injuries with my elbow and
back in the last few months, but now I feel good physically and
am ready to show my best tennis again.
"My injuries meant that my results weren't so good and I had to
miss some tournaments, but now that I'm completely fit I have
much more self-confidence. I know if I'm fit I can compete with
the best players, like Karolina."
Said Pliskova: "I could have been better in every area that I
played today. My movement wasn't great and it was not really
happening on my serve. She's a big hitter from the baseline, she
started fast and she deserved to win today."
In the second round, Giorgi will face Qiang Wang of China, who
defeated Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
In other first-round matches, wild card Marketa Vondrousova of
the Czech Republic beat Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-7 (6),
7-5, 6-2, and Oceane Dodin of France beat Annika Beck of Germany
7-5, 6-4.
