May 11 (The Sports Xchange) -
New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia was diagnosed with an arterial
clot in his right shoulder and may need surgery, the team announced
on Thursday.
The 27-year-old right-hander will visit Dr. Robert Thompson in St.
Louis on Friday for further tests before a determination can be made
regarding potential surgery.
Familia surrendered four runs (three earned) on two hits with two
walks in one-third of an inning on Wednesday in New York's 6-5
setback to the San Francisco Giants.
The Dominican owns a 1-1 mark with a 3.86 ERA in 11 appearances in
2017 on the heels of serving a 15-game suspension for an offseason
domestic violence incident.
Familia was a first-time All-Star last year and led the majors with
a team-record 51 saves, finishing with a 2.55 ERA and 84 strikeouts
in 77 2/3 innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies and manager Pete Mackanin agreed to a
contract extension, the team announced.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but Mackanin's deal will carry
him through the 2018 season with a club option that extends into the
2019 campaign.
--
Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout will return to the lineup on
Thursday night against the Detroit Tigers after missing five
straight games with a left hamstring injury, the team said.
Trout, who injured the hamstring last week and later aggravated it,
is serving as the designated hitter for Thursday's game.

The Toronto Blue Jays put left-handed pitcher Francisco Liriano on
the 10-day disabled list with inflammation of the left shoulder.

The Blue Jays have two other starting pitchers on the
disabled list -- Aaron Sanchez (split finger nail) and J.A. Happ
(elbow).
Liriano allowed a season-worst seven runs in two-plus innings in his
start Wednesday night against the Cleveland Indians, a game the Blue
Jays won 8-7. Liriano is 2-2 with a 6.35 ERA in seven starts this
season.
--
Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was a late scratch
from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays
because of a right quadriceps strain.
Cano left Tuesday's game in Philadelphia with the strain after going
2-for-3 with a homer.
--
The Oakland Athletics optioned right-hander Jharel Cotton to
Triple-A Nashville, the team announced.
Cotton is 3-4 with a 5.68 ERA in seven starts this season. His 35
strikeouts are the most among American League rookies. However, the
25-year-old Cotton served up three homers while being tagged for
seven runs and eight hits in Tuesday's loss to the Los Angeles
Angels. )) [© 2017 Thomson Reuters. All
