[May 27, 2017]    Hutchinson, Kansas - Fourteen athletes from the Lincoln College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the NJCAA National meet May 19-21. The meet was hosted by Hutchinson College in Hutchinson Kansas and featured many of the top track and field athletes in the nation.

One of the big highlights of the meet was Deonta Johnson breaking the school record in the javelin and placing 7th in the event. His throw of 48.55 meters beat the old mark set in 2009 by Jesse Bernhardt (48.02m). The men’s 4x100 also gain a spot on Lincoln’s top 5 Performance list. The team of Kane Jackson, Roman Hampton, Dwight Johnson and Dontae Adams placed 11th at the National meet. Their time of 41.06 places them 3rd on Lincoln’s top 5 list. Their time was actually faster than last year’s time that earned them 6th place.

On the women’s side, the 4x100 relay team of Qutaya Burse, Carolyn Porter, ShaTavia Lowery and Apeasha Ashby placed 11th with a time of 48.73. That time places them 5th on Lincoln’s top 5 list. Sala Hanne also earned a top five spot in the LC record book when she ran the 1500 in a time of 5:16.8. That time puts her 4th on the top 5 list.

Coach Herron said, “I was impressed at how well we placed in some of our events since we had not had a meet in three weeks due to the weather. I was very concerned that their timing would be off in the relays but they did a great job with their hand offs. Deontae Johnson did an awesome job and earned a trip in the Finals with his final throw in prelims. He was very cool under the pressure.”

“All of our athletes did a fine job of representing Lincoln College,” Herron continued. “They competed against some of the best competition in the nation and also some very serious weather. I am very proud of them and the fine season they had.”
